American actor Rachel Zegler has declared that her West End debut performance in the musical Evita received the longest standing ovation in the history of London's theatre district. The 24-year-old star, who portrayed Argentine politician Eva Perón, described her innovative balcony rendition of "Don't Cry For Me, Argentina" as groundbreaking during an appearance on BBC One's The Claudia Winkleman Show.
Innovative Outdoor Performance Captivates London
Zegler made her West End debut in 2025 in Sir Tim Rice and Lord Andrew Lloyd-Webber's production at the London Palladium. Her performance featured a unique external balcony segment where she sang the show's signature number to massive outdoor crowds that extended down Oxford Street toward the nearby Ikea furniture store.
"I thought it was the most amazing, innovative thing that's ever happened," Zegler told host Claudia Winkleman. "There were more people at closing night outside than there were sitting inside... it went all the way down to the Ikea." The London Palladium is situated just a short distance from the retailer's Oxford Street branch.
Critical Acclaim and Award Recognition
Zegler's portrayal of Eva Perón, tracing the politician's journey from actor to First Lady of Argentina, earned significant critical praise. The Independent awarded the production five stars, describing Zegler's performance as "enthralling." Her work also garnered awards at both the WhatsOnStage Awards and the Stage Debut Awards.
During her television appearance, Zegler wore a sleek black strapless zip-up dress accessorized with a gold choker. She was joined by comedian Joanne McNally, who humorously contrasted Zegler's achievement with her own Palladium record for wine sales.
From West Side Story to Snow White Controversy
Zegler first gained prominence playing Maria in Steven Spielberg's 2021 remake of West Side Story. She later secured the role of Snow White in Disney's upcoming live-action adaptation of the classic animated film. However, her casting as a character traditionally described as having skin "as white as snow" sparked social media controversy due to Zegler's Colombian heritage.
The actor has since appeared in multiple film projects including The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes, a prequel to The Hunger Games franchise, while maintaining an active stage career alongside her screen work.
