Mark Carney's Liberals Forge Majority Government in Canada

Prime Minister Mark Carney has declared it is Canada's "time to come together" after his Liberal Party secured a parliamentary majority through a combination of byelection victories and defections from rival parties. This development, occurring just over a year after Carney took power, represents only the third majority government in Canada in the past two decades.

Byelection Sweep and Defections Boost Liberal Numbers

On Monday evening, the Liberals outperformed expectations in three byelections, capitalising on a struggling Conservative Party. Danielle Martin won easily in University-Rosedale, while Doly Begum, who was wooed from the provincial New Democratic Party, captured nearly 70% of the vote in Scarborough Southwest. Tatiana Auguste emerged victorious after a close battle in the Montreal-area riding of Terrebonne, following her headline-making single-vote win in 2025.

Prior to these special elections, the Liberals held 171 seats in the House of Commons, with five of those coming from lawmakers who had defected from other parties. The results have now increased their total to 174 out of 343 seats, granting them a clear majority. The Conservatives hold 140 seats, the Bloc Québécois 22, the NDP six, and the Greens one.

Carney's Call for Unity and Governance Pledge

In a statement released shortly after midnight, Carney emphasised humility, determination, and a clear understanding of the current moment. He called for bipartisan "collaboration, partnership, and ambition" in the coming months, stating, "We will build a Canada that is not just strong, but good; not just prosperous, but fair; not just for some, most of the time, but for all, all of the time."

Carney's Liberals were initially handed a minority government mandate by voters last year. However, support has been bolstered by the constant threat of Donald Trump's protectionist trade policies and their unpredictable implementation, with Carney pledging a steady economic hand.

Unprecedented Path to Majority and Conservative Criticism

The Liberals' achievement is highly unusual, as they have cobbled together a majority from a legislative minority through floor crossings from parties on both the ideological left and right, a feat without modern precedent. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, who has lost four parliamentary members to the Liberals, condemned the outcome, accusing Carney of winning through "backroom deals with politicians who betrayed the people who voted for them."

Poilievre warned that Liberals expect Canadians to become complacent, allowing Carney to wield total power without accountability. With the next election likely three years away, Poilievre faces reduced political power and persistent rumours of more Tory defections. Electoral results highlighted the challenge, with Conservative vote share dropping by double-digits in all three ridings, including one of the party's worst-ever performances outside a major city in Quebec.

Political Landscape and Legislative Agenda

National polls show the Liberals far ahead of the Conservatives, a dramatic reversal from less than two years ago when the Tories were on the cusp of a historic majority. With their new majority, the Liberals will now control committees in the House of Commons and dictate the scope and pace of their legislative agenda.

One key focus is minimising the economic impacts of the US war with Iran, which has driven up fuel costs across Canada. On Tuesday, Carney announced that his government would suspend the federal fuel excise tax on gasoline and diesel later this month until early September, describing it as a "responsible measure" to cut fuel costs.

Additionally, Canada is bracing for what experts suspect will be bitterly fought trade negotiations with the United States in the coming months, as both sides seek a renewed free trade pact.
