Greens Achieve Historic Breakthrough in Gorton and Denton By-Election
The Green Party has made political history with a landmark victory in the Gorton and Denton by-election, securing their first parliamentary seat in northern England and ending nearly a century of Labour representation in Manchester's Gorton area.
A Century of Labour Dominance Ends
This watershed moment represents the first time in approximately 100 years that the Gorton area of Manchester will not be represented by a Labour Member of Parliament. The newly created constituency of Gorton and Denton, which replaced the former Manchester Gorton seat at the 2024 general election, had been held continuously by Labour from 1935 until its abolition.
Notable Labour MPs who served the area during this period included William Wedgwood Benn, father of former cabinet minister Tony Benn and grandfather of current Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn. Sir Gerald Kaufman also represented Manchester Gorton for an impressive 34 years from 1983 until his passing in 2017.
Historic Numbers and Political Shifts
Hannah Spencer has become the pioneering Green MP for the north of England following her triumph in Gorton and Denton. This victory marks the Green Party's inaugural by-election win for a House of Commons seat and represents the sixth largest Labour majority overturned at a by-election since the Second World War.
Labour's majority of 13,413 from the 2024 general election has been dramatically reversed. This substantial shift ranks among the most significant by-election upsets in modern political history, surpassed only by five larger majority overturns including Reform's victory at Runcorn & Helsby in 2024 with a 14,696 majority reversal.
Dramatic Vote Share Changes
The electoral transformation in Gorton and Denton reveals striking changes in voter allegiance. Labour's share of the vote plummeted from 50.7% in 2024 to just 25.4% in the by-election, representing a dramatic decline of 25.3 percentage points. This ranks among Labour's most substantial vote share decreases at a by-election this century.
Conversely, the Greens achieved a remarkable surge, increasing their vote share from 13.2% in 2024 to 40.7% in the by-election. This represents the Green Party's highest vote share in any parliamentary by-election, substantially exceeding their previous best performance of 10.2% in Somerton and Frome during 2023.
Other Party Performances and Implications
The Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties experienced significant electoral squeeze, polling just 1.9% (down from 7.9%) and 1.8% (down from 3.8%) respectively. Meanwhile, Reform UK more than doubled its vote share from 14.1% in 2024 to 28.7%, marking their second-best by-election performance behind their 38.7% achievement at Runcorn and Helsby in 2024.
Hannah Spencer's victory expands the Green Party's parliamentary representation to five MPs, their highest number ever. She joins Sian Berry in Brighton Pavilion, Carla Denyer in Bristol Central, Ellie Chowns in North Herefordshire, and Adrian Ramsay in Waveney Valley.
Voter Engagement and Historical Context
The adjusted turnout at Gorton and Denton reached 47.5% after accounting for spoiled ballot papers. This exceeds the 46.2% turnout recorded at the Runcorn and Helsby by-election in 2024 and represents the highest by-election turnout since Tiverton and Honiton recorded 52.2% in June 2022.
This historic result not only reshapes the political landscape of northern England but also signals potential realignments in British politics as traditional party loyalties undergo significant transformation.
