Fentanyl Found in Barbie Doll Box, Police Warn of Five Sales

A mother has been left horrified after discovering a dangerous stash of fentanyl concealed inside a Barbie doll box she purchased for her young daughter. The shocking incident has prompted a major police investigation, with authorities warning that at least five of the tampered toys were sold to unsuspecting customers.

Discovery at a Local Store

Jade Adams made the alarming find on Saturday, March 21, while shopping with her husband and daughter at Cargo Largo in Independence. She had bought the Barbie doll as a gift, but upon opening the packaging at home, she uncovered a powdery substance taped inside the back of the box. Immediately concerned, Adams returned to the convenience store to alert staff and ensure the remaining dolls were removed from shelves.

Police Launch Urgent Investigation

At approximately 10:18 am local time, the Independence Police Department (IPD) was contacted by Cargo Largo security regarding the suspicious powder. Officers quickly responded and confirmed the substance was fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid. An investigation was launched in collaboration with the store to determine the scale of the contamination.

A police spokesperson revealed that their inquiry determined five compromised Barbie doll units had been sold. IPD has successfully tracked down four of these units, but one remains outstanding. The spokesperson stated, "We have an active lead we are working to track it down." Authorities emphasized that the Barbie dolls themselves were not tampered with; the fentanyl was found taped inside the packaging. There is no evidence to suggest other retailers received contaminated units, and no injuries have been reported.

Mother's Terrifying Realisation

Speaking to local media, Adams expressed her fear over what could have happened if her daughter had been exposed to the drug. "They could have dusted that all over themselves, their house, wherever they opened it," she said. "Like, it's not just me, it's really just the kids for me. That's my baby, that's my last baby, that's terrifying."

On Facebook, Adams wrote about the incident, highlighting her role in bringing it to light: "Me and my parents brought this to light for them! I bought my daughter a Barbie yesterday and opened it to find a back full of drugs!!! In the children’s toys is sick."

Understanding Fentanyl Risks

Fentanyl is a powerful opioid painkiller prescribed by doctors to treat severe pain, such as after surgery or serious injuries. It works by blocking pain signals between the brain and body and can also reduce anxiety related to pain. Available in forms like lozenges, tablets, patches, and nasal sprays, its use is strictly regulated due to potential side effects and high risk of addiction.

While often in headlines due to illegal trafficking, particularly in the US, fentanyl remains a controlled medication in both the UK and US when used under medical supervision. The NHS warns that side effects are more common with higher doses, advising patients to be fully aware of the risks associated with this potent drug.

The police investigation into how the fentanyl ended up in the Barbie doll packaging is ongoing, with efforts focused on locating the final missing unit to prevent any potential harm to children.
