The mother of murdered toddler James Bulger, Denise Fergus, has spoken of her heartbreak after her son's grave was desecrated by vandals in a sickening attack. The incident occurred at Kirkdale Cemetery in Liverpool, where cherubs on either side of the two-year-old's headstone had their heads smashed off.
Mother's Emotional Appeal for Justice
Sharing a photograph of the damage on social media, a devastated Denise Fergus wrote: 'Today I felt my heart break once again. We got a message from a lady walking her dog at the cemetery where James's resting place is.' She described rushing to the scene to discover the destruction, adding: 'I need to find whoever done this to my son's resting place. I try to help as many families as I can... and some horrid b*****d has done this... to a baby's grave! Really??'
The vandalism is believed to have happened between late morning and mid-afternoon on Thursday. Denise Fergus urged the public to share information via the James Bulger Memorial Trust charity page or contact Merseyside Police, stating: 'I'm devastated someone could be so cruel and hurtful to My James.'
Background of the Tragic Case
James Bulger was abducted from the New Strand Shopping Centre in Bootle, Merseyside, in February 1993. He was lured away by two 10-year-old boys, Jon Venables and Robert Thompson, who tortured and killed him. His mutilated body was found two days later on a railway line in Walton, Liverpool.
Thompson and Venables were convicted of abduction and murder in November 1993, becoming the youngest convicted murderers in modern British history. They were sentenced to indefinite detention and released on life licence in 2001 at age 18, with new identities under a protection programme.
Venables has since been jailed twice for possessing child pornography images, in 2010 and 2017, with his parole appeals rejected in 2023.
