Purple-Vested Observers to Document Federal Actions
The attorney general's office will utilise volunteers who will be clearly identifiable by their distinctive purple safety vests as they gather information in areas where ICE activity has been reported. According to James, these observers will serve as "neutral witnesses" who will document potential violations of law without interfering with enforcement operations.
"We have seen in Minnesota how quickly and tragically federal operations can escalate in the absence of transparency and accountability," James stated, referencing recent incidents including the shooting deaths of Alex Pretti and Renee Good by federal agents. "My office is launching the Legal Observation Project to examine federal enforcement activity in New York and whether it remains within the bounds of the law."
