Tragic Death at Lyme Regis Harbour as Pensioner Slips Off Cobb Wall

A pensioner has tragically died after slipping off the harbour wall at The Cobb in Lyme Regis and falling into the sea, with his wife witnessing the incident and sustaining injuries herself. The man, aged in his 70s, lost his footing along with his partner, leading to a fatal plunge into the water while she landed on the precipice.

Emergency Response and Rescue Efforts

Members of the public immediately dialled 999, prompting a swift response from the Lyme Regis RNLI lifeboat team, who arrived within minutes. However, due to challenging sea conditions, the lifeboat was unable to reach the casualty directly. In a determined effort, a crew member ran to the end of the wall and entered the water from there to assist the man.

The casualty was eventually lifted out of the sea using ropes and handed over to ambulance paramedics, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife received treatment for injuries to her head and arm sustained during the fall.

Police Statement and Similar Incident

A spokesperson for Dorset Police confirmed the details, stating, "We received a report relating to a man and a woman in need of medical attention following a fall in the area of the Cobb in Lyme Regis. Emergency services attended and very sadly the man, aged in his 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene. His family has been informed and our thoughts are with them at this extremely difficult time. The woman was taken to hospital for treatment to a suspected head injury. The incident is not being treated as suspicious."

This tragedy occurred just two weeks after a similar incident at the same location, where a man in his 30s also slipped on top of The Cobb and fell into the sea. On that occasion, he was saved by coastguards after members of the public threw him a life ring.

RNLI Comments and Safety Concerns

A spokesperson for Lyme Regis RNLI expressed sadness over the event, noting, "It is very sad. We went to assist a man who had fallen off the Cobb and into the sea. It is quite slippery on top of The Cobb at the moment. The man's wife also slipped and fell on the wall and was hurt. The lifeboat couldn't get to the man due to the state of the tide but a crew member ran to the end of The Cobb and approached the man. He was recovered by coastguards using ropes."

The incident took place at 12.51pm yesterday, highlighting ongoing safety concerns at the popular coastal site. Authorities have emphasised that the fall is not suspicious, but the recurrence of such accidents raises questions about the conditions on the harbour wall.
