TikTok Star Who Flaunted UK Benefits Lifestyle in Thailand Jailed for Drug Crimes

Ellis Matthews, a 35-year-old from Lancashire who gained notoriety as the TikTok 'mum on the run', has been sentenced to 26 months in prison for drug offences after being deported from Thailand. Matthews shot to fame by openly discussing on social media how her £2,300-per-month lifestyle was subsidised by British taxpayers' money while residing in Southeast Asia.

Social Media Notoriety and Benefits Claims

Matthews amassed over 16,500 followers on TikTok under the username '@mumontheruninasia' where she candidly shared details of her lifestyle funded by what she claimed was Disability Living Allowance. She provided tips on how to exploit the benefits system and informed the Department for Work and Pensions that she suffered from six mental disorders during her four years overseas.

However, in a recent confession to MailOnline, Matthews claimed the videos were "just a joke" and that she never received "a single penny" of taxpayer money while in Thailand. "I was just lying in my videos to get more followers and make some money from my TikTok account," she stated.

Arrest and Detention in Thailand

In March 2025, Matthews' overseas lifestyle abruptly ended when she and her son were arrested for overstaying her visa in Thailand. They were confined in the Mothers and Children Immigration Detention Centre in Bangkok, which Matthews described as a "hell hole prison" overrun with rats and cockroaches.

She was incarcerated for over three months before being deported without her son last year. Despite the dreadful circumstances, Matthews declined to buy a flight back to the UK due to fears that social services would take her four-year-old son Cairo into custody.

Drug Offences and Sentencing in the UK

Within weeks of returning to Lancashire, Matthews was apprehended on suspicion of drug offences following a police raid on her residence in Pattaya. She appeared for sentencing at Preston Crown Court Sessions House on March 13 after previously pleading guilty to:

  • Possession of class A and B drugs
  • Supplying class A and B drugs
  • Involvement in the supply of class A and B drugs

Recorder Fiona Clancy informed Matthews that the 108 days already spent in detention in Thailand would be deducted from her sentence at HMP Styal. Matthews, who previously appeared on the reality show Judge Rinder and claimed to have frittered away a £6 million fortune, now faces substantial prison time.

Family Separation and Defense

Upon her return to the UK, Matthews disclosed that she had left her four-year-old son with a relative in Thailand while she stayed with friends. She hit back at those criticising her lifestyle, telling MailOnline: "Leaving Cairo behind was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. But I had no choice because I'm the victim of an online hate campaign that is making me out to be a bad mother."

She added: "I would never allow him to be passed around suffering in UK care. He has the right to a safe childhood." The case highlights the complex intersection of social media influence, benefits claims, and criminal activity that has resulted in significant legal consequences for the TikTok personality.
