Two people have been shot by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in Portland, Oregon, intensifying a wave of national protests sparked by the fatal shooting of a woman in Minneapolis just one day earlier.
Details of the Portland Incident
The latest shooting occurred on the afternoon of Thursday, January 8, 2026, according to Portland City councillors. The incident took place near the intersection of East Burnside and 141st Avenue.
Portland City Council President Elana Pirtle-Guiney stated she believes the two victims survived, though there has been no further update on their condition. The FBI is leading the investigation into the shooting, as reported by ABC.
Nationwide Protests Ignited by Minneapolis Death
This incident unfolded as anti-ICE protests broke out across the United States, including in Portland. The demonstrations were triggered by the death of 37-year-old Renee Good in Minneapolis on Wednesday.
Good was fatally shot by an ICE officer while in her car on a snowy residential street. Officers were conducting an operation related to the administration's immigration crackdown. Protesters gathered swiftly after the shooting, holding a vigil for Good and urging public resistance against immigration enforcers.
Divisive Political Fallout
The tragedy has ignited a fierce political debate. Vice President JD Vance claimed Good's death was "a tragedy of her own making." Speaking at the White House, he stated he had seen video of the incident and asserted that Good accelerated her car into the officer and hit him, though available footage does not clearly show contact.
Vance further argued Good was "brainwashed" and "a victim of left-wing ideology," blaming a "lunatic fringe" movement against law enforcement.
In contrast, Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey said arguments of officer self-defence were "garbage." President Trump asserted Good "viciously ran over" the ICE officer.
The administration has defended its actions. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called the killing "a result of a large, sinister left-wing movement," vowing to redouble efforts to remove "criminal, illegal alien killers, rapists and paedophiles" from American streets.
President Trump has deployed federal law enforcement and National Guard troops to Democratic cities as part of his crackdown on crime and immigration, a move rejected by Democrats and officials in Minnesota as inflammatory.
