America’s 250th birthday celebration is being overshadowed by a toxic myth, as the Trump administration hijacks the commemoration with a blend of egotism, Maga populism, and Christian nationalism. The official bipartisan commission, America250, has been eclipsed by the Trump-backed Freedom 250, which has siphoned public funds and private donations.
Artists Withdraw from Freedom 250 Event
Several musicians, including rapper Young MC and country singer Martina McBride, withdrew from the Freedom 250 event after discovering its political ties. Young MC stated on Facebook, “The artists were never told about any political involvement with the event.” After many acts pulled out, organizers replaced them with Donald Trump, calling him the “Number One Attraction anywhere in the World.”
Trump’s Conflation of Self with Nation
The situation exemplifies how Trump conflates the nation’s founding with a celebration of himself, saying “l’état c’est moi.” The celebration replaces substance with spectacle and history with myth, featuring white male heroes under a Christian God, while suppressing inconvenient historical truths.
Background: The 1776 Commission vs. the 1619 Project
In 2016, Congress created a bipartisan semiquincentennial commission to plan the 2026 events. However, the Trump administration countered the 1619 Project, which highlighted slavery’s role in America’s founding, by establishing the 1776 Commission. Its report promoted “enlightened patriotism” centered on Great White Men, criticized by the American Historical Association as “government indoctrination.” Biden disbanded the commission in 2021, but its spirit has resurfaced under Trump.
Freedom 250’s Funding and Influence
Freedom 250, nestled within the Interior Department, has received nearly $80 million in federal funds, far exceeding prior allocations. It offers incentives like private receptions with Trump for $1 million. The money funds events such as a North Korean-style military parade and a rally at the Iowa state fairgrounds, where Trump declared, “I cannot stand them,” referring to Democrats.
Redirecting Funds to Trump’s Priorities
Agencies like the National Endowment for the Humanities have seen funds diverted to Trump’s proposed National Garden of American Heroes. The Institute for Museum and Library Services now requires grant applicants to “teach citizens about what makes our country the greatest in the world.” The Smithsonian Institution has been ordered to submit exhibits for “content corrections” to remove divisive language.
Christian Nationalist Influence
Freedom 250 partners with Christian and conservative organizations, including Moms for Liberty and National Religious Broadcasters. It sponsored “Rededicate 250: A National Jubilee of Prayer,” featuring mostly evangelical preachers and Republican leaders. House Speaker Mike Johnson prayed for God’s hand on the nation. The “Freedom Trucks” display a painting titled “Prayer at Valley Forge,” depicting George Washington kneeling in prayer—a scene with no historical evidence.
America is not one story; its meanings are ever in contest. The Maga semiquincentennial attempts to suppress this protean nature of history, promoting a singular, mythologized narrative.
