A Surprising New Chapter
In her Instagram caption, Smart acknowledged the shock her post might cause, stating that just a few years ago, she would have "absolutely not! Never in 100 years!" considered competing in such an event. She revealed that this was actually her fourth bodybuilding competition, but she had previously been too afraid to share it publicly due to fears of judgment and concerns it might undermine her advocacy work for survivors of sexual violence.
Smart launched the Elizabeth Smart Foundation in 2011, dedicated to ending sexual violence and supporting victims. This came nine years after her traumatic kidnapping at knifepoint from her Salt Lake City home by Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Barzee in 2002. During her nine-month captivity, she testified in 2009 to being repeatedly raped, drugged, and starved by Mitchell, who is now serving a life sentence without parole, while Barzee was released in 2018 after 15 years.
