The Houston Rockets are on the brink of playoff elimination after squandering a six-point lead in the closing moments of Friday's game against the Los Angeles Lakers. Head coach Ime Udoka attributed the collapse to his team's inexperience, citing 'horrendous mistakes' following the 112-108 overtime loss in Game 3 of the first-round series.
Udoka's Frustration Boils Over
'I don't know if you want to say youth or scared of the moment or whatever the case,' Udoka remarked after the game. The Rockets now trail the Lakers 3-0, facing a must-win Game 4 on Sunday night in Houston.
Despite missing injured veteran Kevin Durant, the Rockets held a 101-95 advantage with less than a minute remaining in regulation. However, two costly turnovers by LeBron James sparked a Lakers rally while Houston unraveled.
Critical Errors in the Final Seconds
With 25 seconds left, Lakers guard Marcus Smart was fouled on a three-point attempt, sinking all three free throws. James then stole the ball from second-year Rockets guard Reed Sheppard and drained a three-pointer to tie the game at 101 with 13 seconds remaining.
Sheppard admitted his mistake: 'It was a stupid turnover. I should have hit Alpie right over half court and just made the simple play. I tried to split the two defenders.'
Alperen Sengun, the 23-year-old Turkish center, missed a potential game-winner with 1.7 seconds left. LeBron James grabbed the rebound and called timeout, but his buzzer-beating attempt rimmed out, sending the game to overtime. The Lakers outscored the Rockets 11-7 in the extra period.
Udoka's Message: 'Grow Up'
Udoka forced his team to rewatch the final 30 seconds of the fourth quarter to highlight their mistakes. 'It's obviously a weakness of ours to close out and finish,' he said. 'The amount of mistakes or the type of mistakes are egregious, and you can't have those.'
When asked about his message to the young squad, Udoka was blunt: 'Grow up. You're not that young anymore.'
Rockets Refuse to Give Up
Despite the dire situation, Sengun insisted the team has not surrendered. 'We'll be upset tonight. That's for sure. But we've got to get over it. Nobody's giving up,' he said.
Kevin Durant remains questionable for Sunday's game due to an ankle injury, though Udoka noted he is making progress.
