The Belgian coastal town of De Panne once again played host to the annual European seagull screeching championship, a peculiar contest that draws participants from across the continent. This year, more than 70 contestants from 15 countries converged for the sixth edition of the event, held on Sunday within the lively atmosphere of a local pub.
A Unique Competition with Growing Popularity
The championship attracted a diverse crowd, including families with young children and seasoned competitors, many of whom embraced the theme by donning seagull-inspired costumes. Each imitation of the seabird's distinctive shriek was met with enthusiastic applause from the audience, creating a festive and supportive environment.
A panel of judges meticulously evaluated each performance, awarding up to 15 points for the accuracy of the seagull sound and an additional five points for stage presence. This quirky tradition aims to reshape the public's perception of seagulls, often regarded as nuisance birds.
Organiser's Message of Positivity
Claude Willaert, the event's organiser, highlighted the positive intent behind the competition. "When you are on holiday, you always remember the waves of the sea and the calls of the seagulls," he said. "So be positive about them."
Competitors could participate solo or in groups, with the jury assessing both vocal skills and overall performance. The event has steadily grown since its inception, drawing international attention and media coverage.
Previous Champion: 'Seagull Boy' Cooper
In 2024, a young British boy named Cooper won the championship after demonstrating an uncanny ability to screech like a seagull. Cooper, from Chesterfield, Derbyshire, discovered his talent following an unusual incident: he was bitten by a seagull that had taken an interest in his tuna sandwich.
A devoted Spiderman fan, Cooper likened his experience to that of Peter Parker, concluding that the bite would enable him to become "Seagull Boy." His mother admitted that his squawk took some getting used to, but the family supported him due to his undeniable talent. "People would start to turn around and look for the seagull," she recalled.
The championship continues to celebrate the often-overlooked charm of seagulls, turning their distinctive calls into a source of amusement and community spirit.
