Newsnight Producer Credits Princess Beatrice for Andrew Interview
Sam McAlister, the Newsnight producer who orchestrated the notorious interview with Prince Andrew that severely damaged his reputation, has revealed that Princess Beatrice played a pivotal role in making the broadcast happen. In a new video for Palace Confidential, McAlister acknowledged the lasting repercussions of the 2019 BBC Newsnight interview, which marked a turning point for the House of York.
The Negotiation and Beatrice's Intervention
The interview, which aimed to clear Prince Andrew's name amid scandals linked to Jeffrey Epstein, was over a year in the making. Initially, Andrew's camp approached Newsnight with a request for a "puff piece" focused solely on his charity work, avoiding hard news issues. However, McAlister believes Andrew's main motivation was his daughter Beatrice's upcoming wedding, as he sought to dispel any scandal before walking her down the aisle.
Princess Beatrice intervened about three days before the interview, stepping in to protect her father's interests. McAlister stated that without her involvement, the fateful Newsnight programme might not have occurred. She earned the nickname "The Rainmaker" from McAlister, who noted, "It was clear that if we did not answer her questions well, this interview was never going to happen."
Internal Conflicts and Lasting Impact
The decision to proceed with the interview faced internal opposition. Amanda Thirsk, then Andrew's private secretary, pushed for it, while Jason Stein, hired to manage his PR fightback, quit in protest. The broadcast led to national ridicule, with Andrew's claims about not sweating due to a "peculiar medical condition" from the Falklands War and dining unnoticed at a Pizza Express in Woking becoming long-running jokes.
Reflecting on the interview, McAlister said, "Who could have believed that, all these years later, we still have these many repercussions that come directly and indirectly from that 2019 BBC Newsnight interview?"
Family Dynamics and Current Status
Princess Beatrice, currently ninth in line to the throne, has remained close to her father despite the controversies. In contrast, rumours suggest her younger sister, Princess Eugenie, has begun to distance herself from the scandals. A close friend of Eugenie reportedly told Page Six that she feels "tarnished with a brush that's not hers" and is "very, very frustrated."
Sources close to the princesses added that they are "in as good as spirits as they can be" amid the ongoing controversy, but described the situation as "a never-ending s***show." The interview's fallout continues to affect the royal family, highlighting the enduring impact of that pivotal moment in 2019.
