FA and Police Investigate Rochdale Pitch Invasion and Boateng Punch
FA, Police Probe Rochdale Pitch Invasion, Player Punch

The Football Association and Greater Manchester Police are investigating the dramatic events that unfolded during Saturday's National League title decider at Rochdale, after fans invaded the pitch and York City midfielder Hiram Boateng was captured on video punching a supporter.

Chaos at Crown Oil Arena

The winner-takes-all clash erupted in the fifth minute of injury time when Emmanuel Dieseruvwe headed what appeared to be the goal that would secure Rochdale's automatic promotion to League Two at York's expense. Rochdale supporters immediately poured onto the pitch at the Crown Oil Arena, causing the game to be held up for six minutes as stewards attempted to restore order. The stadium announcer repeatedly urged fans to return to the stands.

Boateng Incident

During the disturbance, video footage shows Boateng on the ground with a fan and a steward standing over him. The 30-year-old former Crystal Palace player then gets to his feet and knocks the supporter over with a single punch. The FA is examining both the pitch invasion and the altercation involving Boateng.

Greater Manchester Police issued a statement confirming they are reviewing the footage: 'We are aware of a video that is circulating of a possible assault involving a player and we have linked in with both clubs and the National League. We will be further assessing the video and reviewing CCTV of the incident.'

Arrests Made

Four Rochdale fans were arrested: one on suspicion of assault and pitch incursion, one on suspicion of a public order offence, and two on suspicion of pitch incursion. Additionally, a York supporter was arrested on suspicion of assault and will be interviewed at a later date.

Dramatic Turnaround

Ironically, the delay gave York an opportunity to regroup and plan a final attack. Manager Stuart Maynard admitted the interruption had helped his team. Once the game restarted, Rochdale needed to hold on for just 65 seconds, but York snatched an equaliser through Josh Stones with practically the last kick of the season in the 103rd minute. The goal secured the title for York, who finished on 108 points, two ahead of Rochdale. The result sparked a second pitch invasion, this time from York fans celebrating their return to the EFL.

Rochdale will now face Southend or Scunthorpe in a play-off semi-final on Sunday.
