Giuffre Family Applauds UK Authorities for Epstein-Linked Arrests
The family of the late Virginia Giuffre has commended British authorities for treating the Epstein files with the urgency they demand, following the arrest of Lord Peter Mandelson on suspicion of misconduct in public office. Mandelson, released on bail in the early hours of Tuesday, February 24, remains under further investigation.
Mandelson's Alleged Ties to Epstein Under Scrutiny
The former US ambassador faces accusations of passing sensitive information to convicted sex offender and financier Jeffrey Epstein during his tenure as business secretary. Giuffre's brother, Sky Roberts, and his wife Amanda told the BBC: "As Virginia Roberts Giuffre's family, we commend the British authorities for taking meaningful action and treating the Epstein files with the urgency they demand. While these arrests aren't for the underlying exploitation, they are a crucial step toward truth and accountability."
They added: "The contrast with the continued inaction in the United States is undeniable. Survivors deserve transparency, swift investigation, and real justice, no matter who is implicated."
Arrest and Investigation Details
On Monday afternoon, February 23, footage emerged of Mandelson being escorted from his home by a plain-clothes police officer. The Metropolitan Police confirmed the 72-year-old was questioned at a London station. Two of his properties had previously been searched in connection with allegations stemming from the US Department of Justice's document release related to Epstein last month.
Mandelson has stated he has "no recollection" of receiving payments totaling $75,000 (£55,000) from Epstein between 2003 and 2004, as bank records in the Epstein files indicate. Epstein is also said to have funded an osteopathy course for Mandelson's husband, Reinaldo Avila Da Silva, in 2009, during the government's handling of the financial crisis.
Broader Context and Political Fallout
Mandelson's arrest follows days after Andrew, the former Duke of York, was taken into custody on similar suspicions. Andrew, stripped of his title last year but still eighth in line to the throne, was released under investigation. The UK Government may consider legislation to remove him from succession once police conclude their probe.
Sir Keir Starmer will chair Cabinet in response to the arrest, while the Liberal Democrats push for the public release of files related to Andrew's appointment as a trade envoy, amid accusations he shared sensitive information with Epstein.
Background on Giuffre and Epstein
Virginia Giuffre was a prominent accuser of Epstein, a convicted sex offender and paedophile who died by suicide in jail before trial. His former girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell, remains imprisoned. Giuffre alleged Epstein trafficked her to Britain for sex with Andrew when she was 17, a claim Andrew denies. Giuffre passed away in April 2025 at her farm in Western Australia.
