Josh Duggar Dismisses Brother's Child Molestation Charges as 'Fiction'
Former reality television star and convicted sex offender Josh Duggar has dismissed child molestation allegations against his younger brother Joseph as 'sensationalized fiction'. This statement comes despite authorities asserting that Joseph admitted to unlawful conduct.
Arrest and Allegations Against Joseph Duggar
Joseph Duggar, aged 31, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with lewd and lascivious molestation of a victim under twelve years old, alongside lewd and lascivious behavior by a person aged eighteen or older. The charges stem from allegations that he inappropriately touched a nine-year-old girl during a family vacation to Panama City Beach, Florida, in 2020.
According to the Bay County Sheriff's Office in Florida, Joseph repeatedly engaged in unlawful sexual activity with the underage girl. Police detailed that he asked the girl to sit on his lap and later on a couch with him. While under a blanket, Joseph allegedly manipulated her underwear, grazed her genitals, and rubbed her thighs.
The girl, now fourteen years old, reported the alleged assault to police in Tontitown, Arkansas. Investigators determined the incident occurred in Bay County, leading to a warrant for Joseph's arrest. He was subsequently arrested by Tontitown Police Department officers and is being held in Arkansas awaiting extradition to Florida.
Josh Duggar's Controversial Response
Josh Duggar, who is currently serving a twelve-year prison sentence for possessing child pornography, responded to the allegations against his brother through a representative. In a statement to the Daily Mail, the representative expressed that Josh was 'deeply saddened' by the charges.
'While family ties remain deep in the Duggar family, Josh and Joseph are not in frequent communication,' the representative stated. 'Nonetheless, Josh understands the stigma of being accused. He lives with the painful reality of how false accusations can destroy a life. He understands how the targeting of a person for publicity can twist the truth into sensationalized fiction.'
The representative added that Josh 'hopes and prays for his brother's well being in this difficult time'. However, this claim that the charges are false directly contradicts police reports indicating Joseph admitted to his actions.
Police Evidence and Admissions
According to Tontitown police, the father of the girl confronted Joseph about the alleged assault on Tuesday. Following this confrontation, Joseph admitted to his actions both to the father and to a Tontitown detective. The Bay County Sheriff's Office also noted that the girl told police Joseph 'eventually apologized for his actions and the incidents stopped after the apology.'
Duggar Family Reality Show Background
Both Josh and Joseph were stars on TLC's reality television series 19 Kids and Counting, which followed the lives of parents Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar along with their nineteen children, all with names beginning with 'J'. The show ran for approximately seven years before being abruptly canceled in 2015.
The cancellation occurred after allegations emerged that Josh had molested five girls as a teenager, including some of his sisters. Although no criminal charges were filed regarding these allegations, the Duggar parents admitted on Fox News that four of the five girls were indeed their daughters.
Josh Duggar's Legal History
In 2022, federal judge Timothy Brooks dismissed a lawsuit from the four sisters who accused Arkansas officials of violating their privacy by releasing documents from the molestation investigation. In his ruling, Judge Brooks confirmed that the sisters 'were sexually abused by their brother, Joshua' between March 2002 and March 2003, when he was fourteen and fifteen years old, and they were between five and eleven years old.
Judge Brooks also presided over Josh's 2021 child pornography trial, where prosecutors stated he downloaded 600 photographs and seven videos of violent child sexual abuse. He was convicted of one count of receiving child pornography and one count of possessing child pornography, though the possession charge was later vacated.
Josh Duggar is scheduled for release in October 2032, after which he will spend twenty years on supervised release. His dismissal of the charges against his brother Joseph stands in stark contrast to the substantial evidence and admissions presented by law enforcement authorities.
