Luigi Mangione lawyer rejects political violence links

Luigi Mangione's attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, has stated that her client, accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, "does not support violent actions" and does not condone political violence. Friedman Agnifilo criticised attempts to link Mangione to unrelated incidents, such as the recent White House Correspondents' Association Dinner shooting, calling such connections "irresponsible, dangerous and prejudicial." The statement was issued in response to a request for comment by Fox News Digital in the wake of the recent, unrelated shooting at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner.

Background of the case

Mangione was arrested on December 9, 2024, for the killing of Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan and has pleaded not guilty to all charges. While federal murder and weapons charges were dismissed, stalking charges remain. Mangione faces a state murder trial starting June 8 and a federal trial in October, with the possibility of life in prison if convicted. He has also voiced concerns about facing two separate trials.

Legal team's stance

Friedman Agnifilo emphasised that her client should not be associated with other acts of violence. She argued that drawing connections between Mangione and the WHCD shooting undermines the presumption of innocence and could prejudice potential jurors. The defence continues to prepare for the upcoming trials, seeking to ensure a fair process.
