Syria Holds First Public Trial of Assad Regime Officials

Syria has commenced its first public trial of officials linked to the fallen Assad regime, with Atef Najib, a cousin of former dictator Bashar al-Assad, appearing in court on charges of mass shootings and torturing children. Najib, wearing a striped prison uniform, sat emotionless in a cage at the Central Palace of Justice in Damascus on Sunday, as crowds filmed him through metal bars.

Background of the Accused

Najib, a former brigadier-general, served as head of political security in Daraa province, where the 2011 uprisings against the regime began. In February 2011, he ordered the arrest of individuals responsible for anti-regime graffiti in Daraa. Two teenage boys were apprehended after their names appeared near the graffiti, and they were tortured and beaten while imprisoned until the actual culprits, aged 18 to 30, confessed. This incident sparked further protests, leading to police firing on demonstrators on March 18, 2011, killing several people.

In April 2011, 13-year-old Hamza al-Khateeb vanished after a protest, and his mutilated body was returned to his parents. Najib was removed from his post by Assad, who was branded the 'Butcher' for his brutal crackdown, but was later reinstated in Idlib province. The crackdown on peaceful protests ignited a civil war that killed over half a million people and displaced millions.

Legal Proceedings

Najib, 65, was arrested in January 2025 after staying in Damascus following Assad's flight to Moscow in December 2024. His trial is part of a broader effort by Syria's new authorities, under President al-Sharaa, to bring Assad regime perpetrators to justice. Judge Fakhr al-Din al-Aryan opened the trial, stating: 'Today we begin the first trials of transitional justice in Syria. This includes a defendant in custody, present in the dock, as well as defendants who have fled justice.'

Assad and his brother Maher will be tried in absentia. Assad, granted asylum by Vladimir Putin, is wanted for premeditated murder, torture, and incitement to civil war. A judicial source noted that preparations are underway for trials of Assad, his brother, and other prominent figures.

Other Developments

On Friday, Amjed Youssef, wanted for the mass killing of civilians in April 2013, was arrested in Hama province. Footage from 2022 showed him commanding the Tadamon massacre, where blindfolded and bound victims were shot. Najib and his mother, Fatima Makhlouf, rose to power through Assad's patronage, and the Makhlouf family became Syria's richest, controlling finances and state media.

The trial of Najib will resume on May 10. In-person trials are also expected for Wassim al-Assad, another relative of the ousted president, former grand mufti Ahmed Badreddin Hassoun, and other military and security officials arrested recently. Syria's new authorities have vowed to ensure justice and accountability for Assad-era atrocities.
