Dominic Cummings Condemned for Controversial Ukraine Remarks

Dominic Cummings has faced significant criticism for comments he made regarding former Conservative MP Jack Lopresti's decision to join the Ukrainian military. The ex-chief advisor to Boris Johnson sparked outrage by suggesting he could "enthusiastically" support the development because Lopresti was "being hunted by drones."

Former MP's Military Service in Ukraine

Jack Lopresti, who represented Filton and Bradley Stoke from 2010 until losing his seat in the 2024 general election, has joined the Ukrainian armed forces following his parliamentary defeat. The former Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party, who previously served with the British Army in Afghanistan, initially volunteered with the International Legion of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine.

Lopresti has experienced frontline combat in the Donbas region and has been vocal about the need for European nations to increase defence spending immediately. "Europe collectively really does need to step up," he argued. "Increasing defence spending in three years' time, that'll be too late."

Controversial Azov Battalion Connection

Last week, Lopresti revealed he was "honoured" to join the 12th Special Forces Brigade 'Azov' of the National Guard of Ukraine, describing the unit as "a symbol of resilience and uncompromising principle." He wrote extensively about his decision, stating: "To have served in what I consider two of Ukraine's finest military formations is one of the greatest honours of my life."

The Azov battalion was formed in 2014 in response to Russian aggression in the Donbas War and has played a significant role in Ukraine's defence since Russia's full-scale invasion. However, the unit has faced international scrutiny due to historical links with far-right extremist groups, though Lopresti praised its evolution into "a benchmark for modern warfare."

Cummings' Provocative Social Media Post

While former Labour communications director Alistair Campbell congratulated Lopresti on his service, Dominic Cummings took a different approach. Sharing a photograph of Campbell alongside Lopresti in military gear, Cummings wrote: "Tory MPs joining the neo-Nazi Azov to be hunted by drones - FINALLY a development on Ukraine I can really get enthusiastic about."

The comment quickly drew condemnation across social media platforms, with many users describing Cummings' views as "disgusting" and inappropriate given the ongoing conflict. One respondent noted: "You're right about a lot of things Dom but dead wrong on Ukraine and China," while another added: "You're really off the deep end on this topic. I don't get it."

Mixed Reactions to Lopresti's Decision

Despite the controversy surrounding Cummings' remarks, many have praised Lopresti's commitment to Ukraine's defence. The former MP, who served under five Conservative prime ministers during his fourteen-year parliamentary career, was defeated by Labour's Clare Hazelgrove in the 2024 election.

Speaking about his military service, Lopresti stated: "It's a huge honour and an immense privilege for me to serve in the Ukrainian military and be able to help the gallant and amazing Ukrainian people in any way I can." He first visited Ukraine in 2023 as part of a government delegation marking the first anniversary of Russia's invasion.

In his detailed statement about joining Azov, Lopresti emphasized: "Azov is built on principle, discipline and brotherhood. To be an Azov fighter is to hold yourself to the highest standard, to put the mission above self. Today, the Ukrainian military is not only defending its own sovereignty, it is also the frontline guarantee of Europe's security."

The contrasting reactions to Lopresti's service highlight the complex political dimensions surrounding international involvement in the Ukraine conflict, with Cummings' comments particularly drawing attention to the sensitive nature of Western support and the controversial history of certain Ukrainian military units.
