Democrats to Boycott Trump's State of the Union Address for National Mall Protest Rally
At least a dozen Democratic lawmakers are reportedly planning to boycott President Donald Trump's upcoming State of the Union address, opting instead to participate in a counter-protest rally on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The event, scheduled for next week, will be branded as the "People's State of the Union" and is organised by progressive media company MediasTouch and left-wing advocacy group MoveOn Civic Action.
Progressive Counter-Programming to Formal Address
According to sources, the rally aims to provide alternative programming to what organisers describe as a "night full of lies and misplaced priorities for the American people" during the official State of the Union. The event will feature appearances by multiple Congressional Democrats, with liberal media personalities Joy Reid and Katie Phang serving as hosts.
Confirmed attendees include Senators Ed Markey, Jeff Merkley, and Chris Murphy, alongside Representatives Yassamin Ansari, Veronica Escobar, and Pramila Jayapal. This collective action represents a significant political statement against the Trump administration.
Lawmakers Voice Strong Opposition
In a press conference announcing the event, Senator Chris Murphy articulated the rationale behind the boycott. "Donald Trump has made a mockery of the State of the Union speech," Murphy stated. "Democrats have no obligation to reward him with an audience as he lies and attacks people who disagree with him."
Murphy further argued that attending the formal address would lend an undeserved veneer of legitimacy to what he termed the "corruption and lawlessness" characterising Trump's second term in office.
Senator Chris Van Hollen, another planned attendee at the counter-rally, echoed these sentiments in a social media post. "Next week, Trump will deliver his State of the Union address. I won't be there," Van Hollen wrote. "Trump is marching America towards fascism, and I refuse to normalise his shredding of our Constitution & democracy. This cannot be business as usual."
White House Response and Historical Context
The White House responded dismissively to the planned walkout. White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson told Politico, "It's not a surprise that they refuse to celebrate and honor the Americans who have benefited from the commonsense policies Republicans have governed with."
Protests during State of the Union addresses are not unprecedented. During last year's event, some Democratic lawmakers wielded small paddles inscribed with protest messages such as "Save Medicaid," "Musk Steals," and "False."
Historical precedents include the 2024 address, where then-Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene attended wearing a red MAGA hat and a shirt referencing Laken Riley, a nursing student killed by an undocumented migrant. In 2020, ten Democrats refused to attend Trump's State of the Union, with three others walking out during the proceedings.
President Trump is set to deliver his address despite an ongoing partial government shutdown, adding another layer of political tension to the annual event. The Democratic boycott and concurrent rally underscore the deep partisan divisions shaping contemporary American politics.
