Highlands and Islands ‘central to Scotland’s prosperity’ – Swinney
Highlands and Islands central to Scotland’s prosperity: Swinney

SNP leader John Swinney has declared that the Highlands and Islands are “central to Scotland’s prosperity” as the party unveiled its regional manifesto for the area. The manifesto outlines a series of policies aimed at supporting the region, including measures to help young people purchase homes, making it easier for them to remain in their communities, enhanced childcare support, and additional cost-of-living assistance.

Key Policies in the Highlands and Islands Manifesto

The manifesto includes a £15 million investment in flood mitigation, a review of rural bus services to explore franchising opportunities, and actions to identify and improve dangerous road junctions and stretches. These initiatives are designed to address specific regional challenges such as housing shortages and connectivity issues.

First Minister’s Campaign Trail

First Minister John Swinney was campaigning across the Highlands on Saturday, emphasising the SNP’s commitment to the region. He stated, “The Highlands and Islands are central to Scotland’s prosperity – and with the SNP and me as First Minister, people will have a government that is always on the side of the Highlands and Islands.”

Swinney acknowledged the unique difficulties faced by the region, particularly regarding housing and connectivity. He expressed determination to ensure the Highlands and Islands continue to thrive, highlighting the cost-of-living crisis as a pressing issue. “Whether food, energy or, in particular, petrol, the Highlands and Islands are on the front line of the cost-of-living crisis and being hit hardest,” he said.

SNP vs. Westminster

The SNP leader contrasted his party’s approach with that of Westminster, noting that residents in the Highlands and Islands face some of the highest petrol prices in the UK because the UK government “simply will not act to support them.” He urged voters to support the SNP to deliver vital assistance.

Additional Measures

Other manifesto policies include tackling the impact of second homes in rural and island communities, with powers to better regulate second home ownership. The plan also commits to investing in rural connectivity through the 4G Infill Programme.

The SNP’s Highlands and Islands manifesto was published on Saturday, as Swinney seeks support to implement these proposals and address the region’s most pressing concerns.
