Kate and William's New Forest Lodge Home Marks a Fresh Start
Kate and William's Forest Lodge: A New Chapter

The Prince and Princess of Wales have relocated to Forest Lodge on the Windsor estate, a move that royal experts describe as the beginning of a new chapter for the family. The eight-bedroom, Grade II listed property, owned by the Crown Estate, is believed to be their 'forever home'. The couple funded the move privately and will pay rent from their personal wealth.

A New Chapter for the Wales Family

Royal biographer Katie Nicholl says the move marks a fresh start. 'It feels like the perfect fit for them,' she notes. 'Forest Lodge is conveniently close to Windsor and London, and nearer to Kate's parents, who are an important part of their lives.' The family previously lived at Adelaide Cottage, a four-bedroom home in Windsor Home Park, which offered privacy but was smaller.

From Adelaide Cottage to Forest Lodge

The move to Adelaide Cottage in 2022 was driven by the need for green space and access to good schools for Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. However, after a difficult few years, the family sought a more permanent residence. Forest Lodge, originally built in the 1770s, has undergone minor alterations approved last summer. While cameras have rarely been allowed inside, Kate's health update videos from Anmer Hall offer glimpses of the cosy, family-focused atmosphere they cherish.

A Home with Muddy Boots and Family Baking

Katie Nicholl imagines Forest Lodge will be a home with 'muddy boots outside, dogs and kids running in and out, something lovely cooking on the stove, and flour-covered surfaces from baking sessions.' The couple values peace and privacy, similar to their Norfolk home, Anmer Hall, where they enjoy long walks and time away from the public eye.

Previous Homes: A Journey Through Life Stages

The couple's relocations reflect different life stages. In 2013, they moved into the grand Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace, a 20-room residence that underwent a £4.5 million renovation. Before that, Kate lived in a rented cottage in Anglesey, Wales, while William served as an RAF pilot, a period she described as 'isolated and cut off'.

Adelaide Cottage: A Step Towards Normalcy

Royal expert Richard Palmer notes that Adelaide Cottage was chosen for its modest size, allowing the family to live without live-in staff. 'They wanted a more normal, upper middle-class home,' he says. 'Kate always felt uncomfortable inside royal compounds, as if living in a goldfish bowl.'

Anmer Hall: A Sanctuary in Norfolk

Anmer Hall, a 10-bedroom Georgian mansion on the Sandringham Estate, was a wedding gift from Queen Elizabeth II. The family spent much of the first Covid lockdown there, enjoying its tennis court, swimming pool, and gardens. Kate chose the estate for her September 2024 health update, speaking of a 'renewed sense of hope' after cancer treatment.

Parallels with the Late Queen and Prince Philip

Richard Palmer draws similarities between the Wales family's choice of Forest Lodge and the late Queen and Prince Philip's preference for Wood Farm, a smaller retreat on the Sandringham Estate. 'They preferred the lodge to avoid unnecessary space and fuss,' he says. 'It wouldn't be surprising if Kate and William spend more time at Forest Lodge than at palaces once they become King and Queen.'
