MP Faces Allegations of Inappropriate Conduct with Senior Navy Officers

Joani Reid, the Member of Parliament for East Kilbride and Strathaven, has been accused of inappropriate behaviour involving two senior Royal Navy officers. These allegations emerge as her husband, David Taylor, faces accusations of spying for China, adding a layer of complexity to an already sensitive situation.

Allegations Stem from Visit to Faslane Naval Base

The most prominent incident reportedly occurred during a visit to Faslane naval base in Scotland, which serves as the home for Britain's nuclear submarines. According to sources, Ms. Reid became 'carried away' during drinks in the officers' mess, leading to accusations of inappropriate conduct with a senior naval officer. This visit was part of the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme (AFPS), a programme designed to educate MPs about military life.

Following this incident, Ms. Reid allegedly left the AFPS prematurely early last year. Another MP on the visit later reported her to parliamentary authorities after her husband's arrest, citing concerns that information about Britain's nuclear deterrent could potentially fall into enemy hands. However, a senior figure has stated there is 'no link' between this behaviour and the China spy case.

Second Officer Steps Back Amid Investigation

In a separate development, a nuclear submarine captain has stepped back from his role this week after being investigated for his relationship with Ms. Reid. The Royal Navy launched a probe last year in response to claims that the senior military officer, who is married, was involved in an inappropriate relationship with the MP.

People familiar with the matter indicated that the investigation was conducted from a 'due diligence perspective' to scrutinise any potential blackmail risks. Further security checks were implemented after the arrest of Ms. Reid's husband, but the Ministry of Defence is reportedly confident that no security breach has occurred.

The officer involved has stated that he decided to step down for personal reasons and has not left the Royal Navy. Ms. Reid, aged 39, and the officer are said to have first met as young adults. While allegations of an inappropriate relationship were fully investigated, the captain was not found to have violated any military rules. However, it is claimed that he and Ms. Reid exchanged flirtatious messages, prompting action to mitigate blackmail risks. A source close to Ms. Reid rejects the characterisation of these messages as flirtatious.

Political and Legal Context

Ms. Reid is married to David Taylor, who was arrested alongside two other former Labour advisers—Matthew Aplin, 43, and Steve Jones, 68—on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service. All three have been released on bail as police continue their inquiries.

In response to the allegations, Ms. Reid has voluntarily given up the Labour whip, although she insists she has done 'nothing wrong'. She stated, 'I am not under investigation by the police and no accusations have been against me. I love my country. To serve the people of East Kilbride and Strathaven as their MP and the Labour Party has been – and continues to be – the privilege of my life.' Following discussions with the Chief Whip, she suspended herself from the whip and will not sit as a Labour MP until internal investigations conclude.

A Royal Navy spokesperson commented, 'The security of the nuclear deterrent is our highest priority, and we have robust processes in place to protect the security of our people and capabilities. We will not comment on individual cases.' Ms. Reid's spokesperson has declined to comment on the latest claims.
