Ilhan Omar Defends Confrontation of Trump's State of the Union Claims
Representative Ilhan Omar has publicly detailed her reasons for shouting at President Donald Trump during his recent State of the Union address, stating she could not remain silent in the face of what she called deliberate falsehoods about Somali-Americans and fatal actions by immigration authorities.
Progressive Democrats Break Ranks to Attend Presidential Speech
While numerous progressive Democrats chose to boycott the nearly two-hour presidential speech, Omar was among a small group of left-wing congress members who decided to attend. She emphasized that her presence, alongside the Minnesota Democratic delegation, was crucial to highlight the impact of federal policies on her constituents.
"It was important for me and the Minnesota Democratic delegation to go," Omar told The Independent. "We believed it was essential to continue highlighting what the occupation we have been living through truly meant for Minnesotans, to understand the weaponization of federal law enforcement against Minnesotans and the terror we've experienced."
Trump's Immigration Remarks Spark Immediate Backlash
During his address, President Trump promoted Operation Metro Surge, his initiative deploying Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents to Minnesota. This operation has been linked to the shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, both killed by immigration officers.
When Trump asserted that the "first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens" and called for an end to sanctuary cities, Omar responded forcefully with "you have killed Americans."
"We've obviously had people that have been harmed, and we've had people that have been killed," Omar explained. "So it was really important for us to physically be there and to bring guests that could speak to that. When he talked about protecting Americans as our number one job, I felt at that moment it was very important to remind him that he did actually kill two Americans that are my constituents, that are our neighbors."
Omar Brings Affected Constituent as Guest to Highlight Issues
To underscore her point, Omar invited Aliya Rahman as her guest for the State of the Union. Rahman is an autistic woman with a traumatic brain injury who was dragged from her car and detained by ICE in Minneapolis, representing the personal toll of immigration enforcement policies.
Disputing Trump's Fraud Allegations Against Somali Community
The confrontation intensified when President Trump claimed that "members of the Somali community have pillaged an estimated $19 billion from the American taxpayer" through fraud in Minnesota's social services. Omar vehemently challenged this figure, noting that it is substantially inflated.
Even the Republican-led House Oversight Committee reported in January 2026 that the fraud, while significant, amounted to approximately $9 billion. In December, then-first assistant U.S. Attorney Joe Thompson stated in a press conference that "half or more" of $18 billion was spent on 14 programs deemed fraudulent since 2018. Thompson later resigned due to the Department of Justice's inadequate investigation into Renee Good's killing.
"He went into this disgusting rant about Somali Minnesotans, and he mentioned the fact that there was $19 billion in fraud," Omar said. "Well, that is just factually a lie, and we as Somali Americans do not deserve to have the president of the United States continue to use us as a distraction, as a scapegoat, and to say the disgusting things that he says about us without responding. I had the opportunity to actually be in a room with him, and you know damn well I was going to respond to that."
Limited Progressive Presence at Contentious Event
Omar and fellow "Squad" member Representative Rashida Tlaib of Michigan were among only a handful of progressive Democrats who chose to attend the State of the Union, with many others opting out. Their vocal interruptions during the speech underscored the deep political divisions and ongoing tensions surrounding immigration policy and presidential rhetoric.
