Ilhan Omar's Guest Arrested at Trump's State of the Union for Standing

During Donald Trump's State of the Union address on Tuesday night, a guest of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, was arrested by Capitol police for allegedly disrupting the event. The guest, Aliya Rahman, a US citizen and Minneapolis resident, was taken into custody after refusing to obey orders to sit down during the speech.

Background of the Incident

Aliya Rahman had previously been involved in a high-profile incident in January, where she was dragged from her car by immigration agents in Minneapolis. This occurred as part of the Trump administration's intensified efforts to arrest and deport alleged undocumented immigrants. Rahman claimed she was disabled and on her way to a doctor's appointment at the time, suffering shoulder injuries from the encounter.

At the State of the Union, Capitol police stated that Rahman "started demonstrating," which violated event rules. In a statement, they explained, "The guest was told to sit down, but refused to obey our lawful orders. It is illegal to disrupt the Congress and demonstrate in the Congressional Buildings." She was arrested for unlawful conduct and disruption of Congress.

Rahman's Account and Police Response

In an interview with Democracy Now on Wednesday, Rahman asserted that she was standing silently before her arrest, with no buttons, facial expressions, gestures, signs, or sounds. She said, "There are only two things you can do at the of the Union, and they are, sit down and stand up. All kinds of people were standing up all night. Me too. I stood up at the moment that I heard this man say some of the most racist things I have heard come out of any leader's mouth about the people of my city."

When questioned about Rahman's claim, a Capitol police spokesperson responded via email to the Guardian, stating, "It's not allowed. She was told to sit. She refused. It's simple." The police also noted that all State of the Union tickets clearly prohibit demonstrating.

Broader Context and Reactions

During his speech, Trump criticized public officials in sanctuary cities for obstructing the "removal of criminal aliens." In response, Ilhan Omar shouted at Trump, "You have killed Americans," referencing the January shootings of two US citizens, Alex Pretti and Renee Good, by federal law enforcement officers in Minneapolis. Trump also rebuked lawmakers who did not stand to support his immigration enforcement efforts, with Republicans cheering loudly.

Capitol police clarified that Omar and other protesting lawmakers were not arrested due to protection under the speech or debate clause of the constitution. Omar later commented on CNN, confirming that Rahman was "back and safe" after the arrest and a hospital visit.

Omar's Invitation and Rahman's Message

Before the address, Omar explained in an interview on MS Now that she invited Rahman to highlight the impact of ICE operations on constituents. She said, "Even though they promised to create safety in our communities, they have created chaos, violence and terror." Rahman, a software engineer, added during the interview that she would tell Trump and supportive lawmakers, "They were elected to come up with policies and ways to govern this country that make people's lives better, right? They were not elected to point at folks they would like to construct as enemies so they don't have to do their jobs."

Omar's press office did not immediately respond to requests for further comment, leaving the incident as a focal point in ongoing debates over immigration, protest rights, and political discourse in the US.
