Reform UK Councillor Admits Using AI Image in Controversial 'Shipped' Blog Post
Reform UK Councillor Admits Using AI Image in Blog Post

A Reform UK council deputy leader has publicly admitted to using an artificial intelligence-generated image in a contentious blog post that claimed London councils were "quietly shifting" tenants, refugees, and homeless families to the North, specifically linking this to Durham's housing waiting lists. Darren Grimes, a former GB News presenter and Durham county councillor, posted the article, which included a picture of approximately a dozen South Asian men in tracksuits standing next to a coach on a housing estate.

AI Image Sparks Social Media Debate

Mr. Grimes defended the use of the photo, stating it was "obviously for illustrative purposes," but this did not prevent a flurry of reactions on social media. Many users initially believed the image was authentic, with one commenting, "The blog say families that looks like single men to me," and another noting, "And they have matching tracksuits! Like a travelling football team." However, others quickly identified the picture as AI-generated, pointing out issues with perspective and authenticity. One user remarked, "Is that another AI image there? Looks like one - perspective is all wrong," while another criticized, "A picture that doesn't tally with your words does not inspire confidence in you or what you say."

Councillor's Response to Media Scrutiny

When questioned by The Independent about the photo, Mr. Grimes dismissed the criticism, calling it "entirely predictable that the left-wing media is hyperventilating over an AI-generated stock image instead of the fact that southern councils are using the North as a dumping ground for their housing failures and mass migration." He emphasized the seriousness of the issue, stating, "Make no mistake, this is happening, people are being pushed to the back of the queue in their own communities." To support his claims, he referenced a recent BBC report indicating that hundreds of people have relocated to the north-east due to housing shortages in their original areas.

Housing Policy Proposals and Local Impact

In his blog post, which was also shared on his social media accounts, Mr. Grimes highlighted that Durham County Council had received official notification of nearly 100 households moving from London to County Durham over a two-year period. He outlined his policy intentions, pledging to prioritize veterans, domestic abuse victims, and others with genuine needs. Currently, the council gives preference to individuals who have lived in the region for at least one year, but Mr. Grimes proposed increasing this to a two-year local connection rule. He assured that "sensible exemptions" would apply for groups such as care leavers and those with work or caring responsibilities in the area.

Background on Darren Grimes

Darren Grimes, who began presenting his own weekend show on GB News in January 2022, saw the program cancelled less than a year later. His involvement in political commentary and local governance has continued, with this incident drawing attention to the ethical use of AI in political messaging and the ongoing debates over housing allocation and migration within the UK.
