Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has delivered a poignant Easter message, acknowledging a period of "real anxiety" for Britain as economic pressures mount and global conflicts escalate. In his address, he linked rising living costs to the ongoing turmoil in Iran and emphasised the nation's strength when it chooses "community over division."
Faith as a Source of Reassurance
Sir Keir suggested that faith could provide "reassurance and grounding" during uncertain times, praising churches across the country for their unwavering support of families and their role in uniting communities. He highlighted the quiet, tireless efforts of Christian communities in offering comfort and standing alongside those in need.
Economic Pressures and Global Instability
Britons are bracing for a significant cost-of-living squeeze, exacerbated by conflict in the Middle East and a blockade on the Strait of Hormuz. This vital shipping route handles approximately one-fifth of the world's oil and gas, and its disruption has sent global oil prices skyrocketing.
In response to these high prices, the government has frozen fuel duty until September, with a scheduled increase under review. Additionally, average household energy bills are predicted to rise when Ofgem's current price cap expires at the end of June, further straining family budgets.
Spirit of Service and National Renewal
In his message, Sir Keir described Easter as a celebration of hope, new life, and renewal. He stated, "It is precisely that spirit of service which exemplifies national renewal, and reflects the very heart of Christ's example." He acknowledged that conflicts abroad, domestic pressures, and future uncertainties are weighing heavily on households.
The Prime Minister added, "In moments like these, faith offers reassurance and grounding – a reminder that we are not alone, and that hope can still take root even in difficult soil." He reiterated the government's commitment to working across faiths and differences to build a more resilient, inclusive, and connected country.
Opposition Leader's Hopeful Message
Tory Opposition leader Kemi Badenoch also shared a hopeful Easter message, describing the occasion as "a reminder that even in the darkest times, renewal is possible and that light can overcome darkness." She emphasised the cultural value of Christianity, noting its impact through acts of kindness, service, and sacrifice in communities nationwide.
Badenoch highlighted the relevance of Easter's message of redemption and second chances amid global conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, as well as domestic challenges. She extended her wishes for a happy Easter to Christians and all people across the United Kingdom.
Sir Keir concluded by thanking those who volunteer through churches and Christian charities, wishing Christians in the UK and around the world a peaceful and hopeful Easter filled with the promise of new life.
