Anthony Joshua Returns to Gym After Fatal Nigeria Crash, Issues 'I Am a Fighter' Statement
Anthony Joshua back in gym after fatal car crash

Former two-time heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua has made a poignant return to the boxing gym, just weeks after being involved in a devastating and fatal car crash in Nigeria.

The Tragic Incident in Nigeria

Anthony Joshua was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that collided with a stationary truck on a major expressway near Lagos in late December. The 36-year-old British boxer escaped with minor injuries, but the accident claimed the lives of two of his close friends and teammates, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Their funerals were held in London on January 4.

Joshua had been in Nigeria on holiday and visiting family, following his knockout victory over YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul. He received hospital treatment for a few days and was discharged on New Year's Eve. The driver of the vehicle, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been charged by the Ogun State Police Command with offences including causing death by dangerous driving and driving without a valid licence.

'Mental Strength Therapy' and Retirement Rumours

In the wake of the tragedy, questions about Joshua's fighting future have been rampant. His uncle, Adedamola Joshua, told Nigerian press on January 6 that the boxer had privately informed his family of his decision to retire, stating he wanted to "leave while the ovation is highest."

However, Joshua's recent actions suggest a different narrative. He has shared snaps on Snapchat from the gym, describing his workouts as "mental strength therapy." The footage shows him hitting pads, performing lower leg exercises, using a stationary bike, and training in a pool. In a powerful statement of intent, he posted a picture of his time on a cardio machine with the three-word caption: "I am a fighter."

He also shared a photo from his legendary 2017 bout with Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley Stadium, further fuelling speculation of a return. Despite the family's comments, sources close to the boxer indicate no final decision on his future has been made.

Promoter Eddie Hearn Urges Patience

Joshua's promoter, Eddie Hearn, has publicly asked for the fighter to be given space and time to heal. In a recent interview with Sky Sports, Hearn confirmed there have been no discussions about Joshua's next fight.

"That's not a conversation that I think anyone's comfortable in having," Hearn stated. "You need someone to have their time and to just be left alone, really, to get over... a terrible incident. The future of Anthony Joshua will be told by Anthony Joshua. And that's the only voice you should listen to."

Hearn expressed his heartbreak for the families of Sina and Latif, and while he believes Joshua will want to return to boxing, he emphasised the decision rests solely with the fighter once he has had time to recover physically, mentally, and emotionally from the traumatic event.
