Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has emphatically declared that his team will not succumb to panic following a painful week of back-to-back defeats that have cast a shadow over their season. The Gunners suffered a crushing Carabao Cup final loss to Manchester City at Wembley, swiftly followed by a shock FA Cup quarter-final exit at Southampton, marking their first consecutive losses this campaign.
Season on a Knife Edge After Cup Disappointments
These setbacks have left Arsenal's season delicately balanced, raising serious questions about their winning mentality during the crucial final stages. However, Arteta remains steadfast, urging perspective and clarity instead of alarm as his squad travels to Portugal for Tuesday night's Champions League quarter-final first leg against Sporting Lisbon.
"What you have to be is clear," Arteta asserted. "Instead of panic, understand if that happens, why it happened, and bring clarity. And when you analyse that and you accept that, you will be better. That's it, and that's the thing that we have to do."
Using Pain as Fuel for Improvement
The Spanish coach emphasised the importance of processing the emotional toll of these defeats to fuel future performances. "Have some perspective on how difficult it is. Feel that pain, feel that emotion, and use it to be better and to improve," he explained. "There are a few things that we have discussed internally, and I'm very convinced that tomorrow we're going to see that."
Despite the cup disappointments, Arsenal maintain a commanding nine-point lead in the Premier League, a fact that provides some solace. Arteta expressed unwavering confidence in his players' desire and hunger, stating, "I know what it means to them, and I know how much they want it. Now is the moment to show it, and we have to do it tomorrow at the highest level. We are hungrier than ever, very excited and very, very motivated."
Team News: Key Returns and Absences for Lisbon Clash
Arteta receives a significant boost with the return of midfield linchpin Declan Rice and attacker Leandro Trossard for the crucial European fixture. Defender Gabriel is also available despite limping off with a knee injury during the Southampton defeat, though his fitness will be closely monitored.
However, the squad will be without star winger Bukayo Saka and defender Jurrien Timber, who have not travelled to Portugal. Arteta remains hopeful both players will be fit for Saturday's Premier League encounter against Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium.
Goalkeeper Situation Clarified
In goal, David Raya is set to reclaim his starting position after being rested for the two cup matches, with Kepa Arrizabalaga preferred in those games. Kepa's error gifted Manchester City their opening goal in the Carabao Cup final, leading to scrutiny over Raya's omission.
Raya, however, dismissed any frustration, saying, "No, it wasn't frustrating. It is part of football. Sometimes you get picked and sometimes you don't. That's up to the boss. You have to be there for your team and your team-mates and in this example, Kepa, and trying to help as much as possible."
The goalkeeper echoed Arteta's sentiment about using recent disappointments as motivation. "We are ready to go again. I don't think the word is 'pressure'. It was disappointing losing to Southampton but that has gone. We have to use that fuel and pain to pick it up for the rest of the season and that starts tomorrow," Raya stated. "It is an opportunity to show who we are and what we are capable of and we have to grab this massive opportunity and win tomorrow's game."
As Arsenal prepare for their Champions League quarter-final, the focus is squarely on redemption and proving their resilience after a challenging week that has tested their mettle.
