Mikel Arteta has declared that Arsenal will not press the panic button despite enduring the painful experience of back-to-back defeats that have placed their season on a knife edge. The Gunners suffered a Carabao Cup final loss to Manchester City before being shockingly knocked out of the FA Cup at Southampton in the quarter-finals.
Season at a Critical Juncture
This marks the first occasion this season that Arsenal have lost two consecutive matches, raising significant questions about their winning mentality during the crucial business end of the campaign. The team now travels to Portugal for the opening leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday night, seeking to banish the disappointment of their recent cup exits.
Arteta's Perspective on Setbacks
Arteta, whose side still maintains a commanding nine-point lead in the Premier League, emphasized the importance of clarity over panic. "What you have to be is clear. Instead of panic, understand if that happens, why it happened, and bring clarity," the Arsenal manager stated. "And when you analyse that and you accept that, you will be better. That's it, and that's the thing that we have to do."
He urged his players to harness their emotions constructively. "Have some perspective on how difficult it is. Feel that pain, feel that emotion, and use it to be better and to improve," Arteta added. "There are a few things that we have discussed internally, and I'm very convinced that tomorrow we're going to see that."
Boost from Returning Players
Arsenal will receive a significant boost with the return of key players for the Champions League clash. Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard are both available for selection, while defender Gabriel will also feature despite limping off with a knee injury during the defeat at St Mary's.
However, the squad will be without Bukayo Saka and Jurrien Timber, who have not traveled to Portugal. Arteta remains hopeful that both players will return for Saturday's Premier League fixture against Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium.
Looking Ahead with Determination
Arteta expressed unwavering confidence in his team's hunger and motivation. "I know what it means to them, and I know how much they want it. Now is the moment to show it, and we have to do it tomorrow at the highest level," he asserted. "We are hungrier than ever, very excited and very, very motivated."
As Arsenal prepare for their European challenge, the focus remains on converting recent pain into future success, with Arteta steadfast in his belief that clarity and perspective will guide the team through this testing period.
