Bayern Munich's honorary president Uli Hoeness has launched a scathing critique of Liverpool's transfer strategy, as the Premier League club pursues a massive £173 million move for Bayern star Michael Olise. The German giants have firmly shut the door on any potential sale, with Hoeness taking aim at Liverpool's recent spending and on-pitch struggles.
Hoeness Questions Liverpool's Spending and Performance
In a blunt assessment, Hoeness dismissed reports of Liverpool's willingness to table a £173 million offer for Olise, while highlighting the Reds' disappointing season despite significant investment. 'If that's true - I don't believe it is, but Liverpool spent 500 million this year and are having a very bad season,' Hoeness stated. 'So we won't be contributing to them playing better next year.'
Liverpool have indeed faced challenges this campaign, despite substantial outlays on players including Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz – who had attracted interest from Bayern before his Anfield move – and Hugo Ekitike. Under manager Arne Slot, the team is battling for Champions League qualification, currently sitting fifth in the Premier League, just one point ahead of Chelsea in sixth.
Bayern's Firm Stance on Olise's Future
Bayern Munich have made it unequivocally clear that Michael Olise is not available for transfer this summer. Sporting director Max Eberl emphasised earlier this week that the club is 'not even considering' selling the French international, with chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen adding: 'No matter which club tries to lure him away, anyone who plays for FC Bayern knows what they have at FC Bayern.'
Olise, 24, joined Bayern from Crystal Palace in a £52 million deal in the summer of 2024 and has three years remaining on his contract. Since his arrival, he has emerged as one of world football's most valuable players, with no release clause in his agreement. His impressive statistics include 16 goals and 27 assists in 39 league appearances, showcasing his pivotal role in Bayern's success.
Liverpool's Search for Salah Replacement
Liverpool's interest in Olise stems from their need to find a replacement for Mohamed Salah, who is set to depart the club at the season's end. The former Crystal Palace winger has been identified as a key target, but Bayern's resolute position presents a significant obstacle.
Reports from Germany suggest Liverpool are prepared to offer £173 million for Olise, with Spanish giants Real Madrid also reportedly ready to bid £143 million to strengthen their attack. However, Bayern's leadership remains unmoved, citing Olise's happiness and importance to the team.
Olise is understood to be content at Bayern, who are on course to win the Bundesliga title and face Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals. This stability and success further bolster Bayern's determination to retain their star asset, leaving Liverpool to potentially reconsider their transfer strategy amid Hoeness's pointed criticism.
