David Beckham Advocates for Trent Alexander-Arnold in England World Cup Plans
Football legend David Beckham has publicly endorsed Trent Alexander-Arnold for a place in England's squad for the upcoming World Cup, despite the Real Madrid defender being omitted from the latest national team selection. Beckham, a former England captain, admitted it would be "very hard not to take" Alexander-Arnold, highlighting the player's exceptional talents even as he faces competition for a spot.
Alexander-Arnold's Exclusion from Recent England Squad
Trent Alexander-Arnold was notably left out of England's expanded 35-man squad for recent matches, including a draw with Uruguay and a friendly against Japan. This decision comes despite his high-profile move from Liverpool to Real Madrid last summer, where he sought new challenges after his contract at Anfield expired. Throughout his career, Alexander-Arnold has been praised for his attacking prowess, particularly during his time at Liverpool, though critics have often pointed to defensive inconsistencies as a weakness.
Beckham's Perspective on the Right-Back Dilemma
In an interview with talkSPORT, Beckham shared his views on the selection conundrum, drawing parallels to legendary defenders like Roberto Carlos. He emphasized that players with offensive strengths sometimes require tactical adjustments from their teams. Beckham stated, "I'm a massive fan of Trent. I've heard so many times about, 'Well, he's not as good at defending as he is [attacking]'. Well, sometimes you have to accept that." He added that while he's relieved not to be making the tough decisions as England manager, he would find it difficult to exclude Alexander-Arnold from the World Cup roster.
England's Current Right-Back Options and Manager's Stance
England manager Thomas Tuchel has acknowledged that Alexander-Arnold remains in contention, noting that other players are currently ahead in the pecking order. Tuchel explained that the team's structure might not fully utilize Alexander-Arnold's strengths at the moment, but he is still under observation, especially with key club matches like Real Madrid's quarter-final against Bayern Munich. Injuries, such as to Reece James, have also influenced squad choices, with players like Tino Livramento and Ben White being utilized in the right-back position recently.
Tuchel clarified, "He's not out of the picture. He's on the long list and everyone is still in the mix, but at the moment some other guys are just ahead." This leaves the door open for Alexander-Arnold to impress in the coming months and secure his place for the World Cup, as Beckham strongly believes he deserves.
