Craig Bellamy Left 'Bewildered' as Wales' World Cup Hopes Shattered in Penalty Drama

Wales manager Craig Bellamy has admitted he was left 'bewildered' after his team's World Cup qualification dreams were crushed in a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to Bosnia-Herzegovina. The loss came despite extensive preparation by the Welsh coaching staff, with Bellamy insisting he does not believe in luck when it comes to spot-kicks.

Wales' World Cup Bid Ends in Agonising Fashion

Wales were aiming to secure back-to-back World Cup appearances but saw their hopes dashed in dramatic fashion on Thursday night. A stunning goal from Daniel James put the home side ahead in Cardiff shortly after the break. However, they failed to capitalise on several chances to extend their lead, allowing former Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko to equalise with just four minutes remaining.

After a tense period of extra time, the match went to penalties, a scenario Bellamy felt confident about due to the team's rigorous training. His confidence grew when Bosnia missed their first penalty, with Ermedin Demirovic's effort saved by Karl Darlow. Yet, Brennan Johnson skied his attempt, and Nottingham Forest's Neco Williams missed the decisive penalty, sealing Wales' fate.

Bellamy's Frustration Over Meticulous Preparation

Bellamy revealed the depth of Wales' preparation, stating: 'We practiced pens by the way. We've done all our research on it, we've spent all week doing it so we couldn't have done any more on penalties because I don't believe in luck on pens. I don't.'

He added: 'You've got to prepare, you've got to rehearse them every day in training, even analysis on penalties went really well, we went through it. That leaves me more bewildered. And when they missed the first one I thought 'yeah, this is what we practise for'. But it wasn't the case.'

Bosnia Advance to Face Italy in Final Qualifier

Bosnia-Herzegovina's reward for their victory is a home final against Italy as they seek to qualify for the World Cup in North America this summer. This would mark only their second appearance at the tournament, coming 12 years after their debut. Skipper Edin Dzeko declared: 'We deserve to be in this final.'

Looking Ahead to Euro 2028 and a Bright Future

Wales' next opportunity for major tournament football is Euro 2028, which they will co-host with England, Scotland, and the Republic of Ireland. Bellamy, who never reached a major tournament as a player with Wales, remains optimistic about the future.

He said: 'We've got a home nations Euros coming up, what an incredible time. We wanted to be in a World Cup this summer, but the future is very bright. There are some good years ahead for Wales. I'm disappointed for the players we couldn't get back-to-back World Cups because we are a good team.'
