Ben White Makes England Return After World Cup Absence

Ben White has been called up to the England national football squad for the first time since his early departure from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar for personal reasons. The Arsenal defender's return comes as head coach Thomas Tuchel expresses confidence that White will not face boos from the Wembley crowd during tonight's friendly match against Uruguay.

Tuchel Addresses White's Recall and Team Dynamics

Thomas Tuchel has acknowledged that Ben White needs to clear the air with his teammates following his return to the England setup. White left the 2022 World Cup prematurely without publicly explaining his reasons, and he subsequently made himself unavailable for selection under former manager Gareth Southgate. Tuchel, however, insists that White deserves a second chance and believes the defender will receive support from fans.

"If you believe it or not, I didn't hear a story about it," Tuchel said. "I asked him and he didn't want to speak about it. I didn't want to know about it because I think he deserves a second chance. He has not put a foot wrong with me."

The German coach added that an explanation among the players who were at the last World Cup is necessary to clear the air, stating it is "sure in progress." Despite some negative reactions to White's recall, Tuchel emphasized that the overall response has been positive and urged trust in his judgment.

Fan Reaction and Squad Selection Pressures

When questioned about potential fan backlash, Tuchel responded, "Support, because he plays for England and we play in a positive moment. I can imagine there are some strong opinions out there, but he deserves a second chance." He highlighted that White has behaved well and hopes for a supportive atmosphere at Wembley.

Tuchel has selected an oversized 35-man squad as he finalizes plans for the upcoming World Cup. For the Uruguay match, 24 players are available, with 11 more senior options set to substitute in for Tuesday's game against Japan. This approach creates a competitive environment in training, with some players likely to be dropped after the Uruguay friendly.

"We address the reality and encourage everyone to be the best version of themselves," Tuchel explained. "It is the last camp before the World Cup. Everyone tries to impress."

Cole Palmer's Fight for World Cup Spot

Chelsea forward Cole Palmer is under significant pressure to secure a place in the final 26-man squad for the World Cup. Palmer, who is in line to start against Uruguay, has not played for England since last summer and has faced an injury-plagued season with a persistent groin issue.

"We have more evidence without him than with him so the pressure is on him," Tuchel stated. "He had a difficult season but he has also had a difficult spell with the national team."

Tuchel noted that Palmer is showing improvement physically, with recent data indicating a return to his original stride length and acceleration. The coach emphasized that Palmer must demonstrate his quality in training and matches, as no spots will be handed out easily.

"He is back to full confidence and we see it in training," Tuchel said. "He needs to understand he fights for his place and we will not hand anything to anyone on a silver platter."

Tuchel on Team Antics and Referee Interactions

Tuchel also commented on recent incidents involving Chelsea, such as a halftime huddle with referee Paul Tierney during a match against Newcastle, dismissing similar antics with England. "I'm not involved in the huddle and I don't even know what we do at the moment," he said. "But a huddle with a referee in the middle is awkward. We will not go for that."

As England prepares for the World Cup, the focus remains on integrating returning players like Ben White and assessing contenders like Cole Palmer in a highly competitive squad environment.
