Bernardo Silva's Man City Future in Doubt as Contract Nears End
Bernardo Silva's Man City future in doubt

Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva has publicly addressed the growing uncertainty surrounding his future at the Etihad Stadium, with his current contract set to expire in the summer of 2026.

The Portugal international, now in his ninth season with the club, confirmed that no decision has been made about his next move. He will become eligible to speak with other clubs as early as January if he does not sign a new deal with the Premier League champions.

Contract Situation and Transfer Speculation

Speaking to Portuguese broadcaster DAZN, Silva acknowledged the delicate nature of his situation. "It's my last year of contract. It is still to be seen what will happen," the midfielder revealed.

Despite the ongoing speculation, Silva emphasised his commitment to his current role, particularly as one of the squad's senior figures. "Regardless of what happens, it's always an honour. And after so many years, of course also being one of the oldest in the squad, the time has come for me to share all this experience," he stated.

His boyhood club, Benfica, are among those monitoring the situation closely and are reportedly exploring a potential emotional return to Lisbon for the talented playmaker.

Guardiola's Perspective and High Praise

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola offered his own perspective on the matter, confirming that he has not directly discussed contract terms with the player. "I want the best for Bernardo," Guardiola said. "If he wants to stay, I will be more than delighted but I don't talk about that subject with him and all I want is the best for his family."

The Catalan coach went on to deliver glowing praise for Silva, highlighting his intelligence and resilience. "He is one of the most clever players I have ever met," Guardiola expressed, detailing Silva's ability to manage game tempo and spatial awareness.

Guardiola also recalled Silva's dedication during a physically challenging previous season. "Bernardo struggled last season, but he was there. Every. Single. Game. Exhausted," he remembered, noting this commitment was a key reason Silva was handed the captain's armband for this campaign.

Immediate Future and Leeds United Clash

After being rested for Manchester City's surprising Champions League defeat to Bayer Leverkusen earlier this week, Silva is expected to be in contention for selection when City face Leeds United in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

The situation remains fluid, with all parties acknowledging that a decision about Silva's long-term future will need to be made in the coming months, either culminating in a contract extension or a potential departure from the club he has served since 2017.
