A public disagreement has emerged between Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher and former manager Jurgen Klopp over the future leadership of the club, specifically regarding the potential return of Steven Gerrard.
Klopp's Confident Prediction
Four years ago, in 2021, Jurgen Klopp was unequivocal about his vision for the Anfield dugout. When asked if he believed club icon Steven Gerrard would one day manage Liverpool, the German responded with conviction. "Oh yes I do, absolutely. I believe it will definitely happen. Good for everyone," Klopp stated. This endorsement came shortly before Gerrard, then in charge of Aston Villa, made his first managerial visit to Liverpool.
Carragher Pours Cold Water on Speculation
Fast forward to the present, and speculation about Gerrard's return has resurfaced following a difficult start to the 2025/26 season for current manager Arne Slot. However, Sky Sports analyst Jamie Carragher has firmly dismissed the idea. Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, Carragher was asked about the links. "No, I wouldn't imagine," he responded.
Carragher argued that the fanbase is not clamouring for a change to Gerrard, despite the former midfielder's legendary status and his success in guiding Rangers to an invincible Scottish Premiership title in 2021. "I don't think most Liverpool fans will be screaming for Steven Gerrard – everyone is desperate for it to work for Arne Slot," Carragher insisted.
The Pressure on Arne Slot
The debate comes amid significant pressure on Dutch manager Arne Slot. Liverpool's 2-0 victory over West Ham United on Sunday 1st December ended a recent slump, but the team has already suffered six Premier League defeats this campaign. Carragher highlighted the dilemma facing the club's hierarchy, pointing out a shortage of elite available managers should a change be made.
"The idea of Liverpool changing the manager who won the league, Liverpool have never done that. Then, who do you get?" he questioned, suggesting the club would face a "nightmare scenario" in any search for a successor.
Despite the struggles, Liverpool have a chance to close the gap on the top four. A win against Sunderland at Anfield on Wednesday evening would see them draw level on points with fourth-placed Aston Villa.
