Championship Roundup: Coventry Edge Past Derby to Close In on Promotion
Jack Rudoni slid across the turf in sheer delight after netting Coventry City's third goal of the night, capping a dramatic comeback in a thrilling Championship encounter. The midfielder, returning from injury since late February, came off the bench to score twice, securing a vital 3-2 victory for the league leaders against Derby County at the CBS Arena.
This result extends Coventry's impressive run to eight wins in their last nine league outings, moving them a commanding 11 points clear of second-placed Millwall. Brentford loanee Frank Onyeka had earlier opened the scoring with his first goal for the club, only for Ben Brereton Díaz to equalise before the break. Rudoni then put Coventry ahead, but Brereton Díaz struck again from the penalty spot to level the scores. However, Rudoni's decisive finish just three minutes later sealed the win, keeping Coventry firmly on course for a return to the Premier League.
Wrexham Rally Against West Brom to Boost Playoff Push
In another standout match, Wrexham staged a dramatic second-half recovery to draw 2-2 at West Bromwich Albion, propelling them into the Championship playoff places. The hosts had taken a two-goal lead before half-time, with Isaac Price's deflected free-kick and Josh Maja's penalty putting them in control.
Wrexham, however, turned the tide after the restart. Josh Windass curled a stunning effort from 20 yards just two minutes into the second half, and parity was restored after 62 minutes when Lewis O'Brien and George Dobson disputed the final touch on a Callum Doyle cross. The draw lifts Wrexham to sixth place, one point above Southampton, with a crucial meeting between the two sides scheduled for Tuesday in north Wales.
Leicester Earn Precious Point in Relegation Fight
At the other end of the table, Patson Daka raced back from international duty to score twice, earning Leicester City a precious point in their battle against relegation with a 2-2 draw against Preston North End. Daka, who had played for Zambia against Argentina in the early hours of Wednesday, opened the scoring in the fourth minute after capitalising on an underhit back pass.
Andrew Moran equalised for Preston before Ben Whiteman's header put the visitors ahead. However, Daka struck again in the 81st minute to secure the draw. Despite remaining in the relegation zone with only one win in 14 league matches, Leicester's second-half recovery offers a glimmer of hope for the run-in.
Other Key Championship Results
In other matches, Blackburn Rovers edged past Birmingham City 1-0 thanks to a Todd Cantwell strike, moving them six points clear of the drop zone. Portsmouth secured a gritty 1-1 draw at Norwich City, while Queens Park Rangers beat Watford 2-1 to deal a blow to the Hornets' playoff hopes. Swansea City fought back from two goals down to draw 3-3 at Sheffield United, and Stoke City cruised to a 2-0 win over already-relegated Sheffield Wednesday.
The Championship continues to deliver high drama as teams jostle for promotion, playoff spots, and survival in one of football's most competitive leagues.
