Chelsea Impose Two-Match Ban on Enzo Fernández Following Controversial Remarks
Chelsea have taken decisive action by dropping vice-captain Enzo Fernández for their next two fixtures, with head coach Liam Rosenior stating the midfielder had "crossed a line" with recent comments about his future. The sanction comes after Fernández questioned his long-term stay at Stamford Bridge and expressed a desire to live in Madrid, sparking speculation over a potential move to Real Madrid.
Rosenior's Disappointment and Club Culture Protection
Rosenior described the situation as disappointing, emphasising that while he holds no personal grievances against Fernández, the remarks violated the club's cultural standards. "For Enzo, it's disappointing to speak in that way," Rosenior said. "I think a line was crossed in terms of our culture and what we want to build. So we had to make a sanction, and that was a decision we've made. The door is not closed on Enzo. It's a sanction to protect that culture."
The punishment means Fernández will miss Saturday's FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale and next Sunday's Premier League clash with Manchester City, though he will continue training with the first-team squad. Rosenior clarified that he cannot speak for Fernández's future intentions, adding, "I can't speak for him."
Agent's Defence and Additional Controversy
Fernández's agent, Javier Pastore, criticised the ban as "completely unfair," arguing that the comments were misinterpreted. In an interview with the Athletic, Pastore explained, "He only mentions Madrid because he was asked which European city he'd like to live in one day. It's logical for an Argentine to say that due to language and culture, but at no point does he say he wants to leave Chelsea or London."
This incident was not isolated, as defender Marc Cucurella also stirred controversy by criticising the sacking of former coach Enzo Maresca and hinting at a return to Barcelona. Rosenior confirmed he addressed the issue with Cucurella, stating, "Marc is fully committed. He wants to be here. He's made that very, very clear to me."
Club Unity Amidst Turbulent Period
Despite these disruptions, Rosenior insisted there is no rift within the dressing room, highlighting unity during a challenging phase. He referred to a recent 10-day stretch as "the most difficult of my career," marked by four consecutive losses and an 8-2 aggregate Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain. "There is not a rift in the dressing room," Rosenior asserted. "We are together. Every club goes through difficult moments, and now's the time for us to come together and perform."
Defending his tenure, Rosenior pointed out that Chelsea rank fourth in the Premier League form table since his appointment in January, countering perceptions of crisis. He also hinted at upcoming contract renewals, following Reece James's commitment, saying, "You'll see what happens in the next couple of weeks in terms of player commitment to this project."
Injury updates include Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah, and Levi Colwill remaining sidelined for the Port Vale match, while Estêvão and Jamie Gittens are available after recovering from injuries.
