Manchester United to Lodge Formal Complaint Over Refereeing Decisions
Manchester United are preparing to submit an official complaint to the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) following a series of contentious refereeing calls during their Premier League clash with AFC Bournemouth. The Red Devils were held to a 2-2 draw at the Vitality Stadium on Friday night, a result marred by fury over inconsistent penalty decisions and a controversial red card shown to defender Harry Maguire.
Controversial Penalty Incidents Spark Outrage
The match saw two pivotal penalty incidents that have become the centre of the dispute. United were awarded their first spot-kick when Matheus Cunha was dragged down in the area by Alex Jimenez, with Bruno Fernandes converting to give the visitors an early lead. However, a second penalty appeal was waved away by referee Stuart Attwell moments later, despite Adrien Truffert appearing to hold and pull Amad Diallo to the ground in an almost identical manner.
This inconsistency proved costly, as Bournemouth immediately capitalised with Ryan Christie equalising at the other end. The Cherries were then awarded a penalty of their own when Harry Maguire was adjudged to have hauled down Evanilson, resulting in a red card for the England international for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. El Kroupi Junior converted from twelve yards to put the hosts ahead, before an own goal from James Hill secured a point for United.
Carrick and Cunha Voice Their Frustrations
United manager Michael Carrick did not mince his words in his post-match assessment, labelling the decisions "baffling" and "astonishing". He stated, "My first thought is he definitely got one of them wrong, because he's given one penalty for the same thing that he's not given one as a two-armed grab. For me, it's two penalties, but it'd be interesting to see which one he acknowledges is wrong." Carrick emphasised that the non-award for the Amad incident was a "huge moment" that allowed Bournemouth to counter-attack and score, fundamentally altering the dynamics of the match.
Forward Matheus Cunha, who won the first penalty, took to Instagram to express his thoughts, posting "An important point according to the decisions of the game. We remain strong," alongside a photograph of himself. This social media message underscores the growing discontent within the United camp regarding the standard of officiating.
United Officials "Furious" Over Perceived VAR Error
According to reports from the Manchester Evening News, senior officials at Old Trafford were left "furious" by what they perceive as another damaging Video Assistant Referee (VAR) error. The core of their grievance lies in the inconsistent application of the rules, with comparable incidents within the same ninety minutes being treated differently. The club's planned complaint to PGMOL highlights their belief that such inconsistencies are unacceptable at the highest level of English football.
This incident adds to a growing catalogue of refereeing controversies that have plagued the Premier League season, raising further questions about the clarity and consistency of VAR interventions. For Manchester United, dropping two points in the race for European qualification only amplifies the frustration surrounding these pivotal match-deciding moments.
