Former Chelsea Midfielder Oscar Retires at 34 Following Heart Health Diagnosis
Former Chelsea midfielder Oscar has officially retired from professional football at the age of 34, as confirmed by his club Sao Paulo. The decision comes after the Brazilian international experienced ongoing cardiac complications, which led to his hospitalisation for five days in November.
Cardiac Diagnosis and Contract Termination
Extensive medical evaluations revealed that Oscar was diagnosed with vasovagal syncope, a common form of fainting triggered by a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure. This condition forced him to terminate his contract with Sao Paulo, which was originally set to run until 2027.
In a heartfelt message posted on the club's social media, Oscar expressed his disappointment, stating, "I wanted to do more for Sao Paulo, I wanted to play more. I think I had both the footballing ability and the age to play more, but unfortunately this happened." He added, "Now I'm going to retire and continue supporting Sao Paulo, continuing my life as a fan. I am ending my career here at Sao Paulo, a career that has taken me to many places, practically all over the world."
Illustrious Career and Achievements
Oscar enjoyed a successful career, earning 48 caps for the Brazilian national team. During his five-year stint at Chelsea, he won the Premier League twice, contributing significantly to the club's successes. He later moved to Shanghai Port, where he secured three Chinese Super League titles before returning to his boyhood club, Sao Paulo, in December 2024 on a three-year contract.
His retirement marks the end of an era for a player who showcased talent on global stages, from England to China and back to Brazil. The football community now reflects on his contributions while wishing him well in his health and future endeavours.
