FIFA Cancels Thousands of Hotel Rooms for 2026 World Cup in Host Cities
The world soccer organisation FIFA has cancelled reservations for thousands of hotel rooms originally reserved for the upcoming 2026 World Cup in host cities including Philadelphia and Mexico City, sparking questions about the reasons behind the move.
Philadelphia Hotel Cancellations
In Philadelphia, approximately 2,000 hotel rooms have been cancelled by FIFA, according to the Greater Philadelphia Hotel Association. The organisation had previously blocked off around 10,000 rooms in the city for the tournament. Ed Grose, president of the Philadelphia Hotel Association, confirmed to ABC 6 that the bulk of the cancellations occurred at four City Center hotels.
Grose noted that FIFA did not provide a specific reason for the cancellations but acted within the terms of its contract and was not penalised. He emphasised that while the cancellations were disappointing, they are not catastrophic, as the rooms will be returned to the marketplace for fans to book.
Impact on Hotel Pricing and Availability
Grose stated it is unclear how the cancellations will affect hotel pricing in Philadelphia, but he encouraged fans looking for accommodations not to delay their bookings. He also highlighted that two conventions are scheduled to take place in Philadelphia around the same time as the World Cup games, which he believes will help fill the rooms without difficulty.
Mexico City Cancellations
The news from Philadelphia follows earlier reports in March that FIFA cancelled 40 percent of its hotel rooms in Mexico City. According to El Financiero, Alberto Albarrán Leyva, director general of Mexico City's Hotel Association, revealed that 800 of the 2,000 rooms booked by FIFA in the city were cancelled.
In an interview with ESPN, Albarrán Leyva downplayed the significance of the cancellations, suggesting that FIFA simply overbooked as a precautionary measure. He explained, "FIFA booked 2,000 rooms months ago to prevent running short and guarantee its operation. Over time, it canceled some reservations because it realized that it was no longer going to use them. There is no other reason or other type of context."
Broader Context and Fan Expectations
FIFA hotel cancellations are also affecting other U.S. host cities, according to Grose, though specific details were not provided. The 2026 World Cup is set to take place across cities in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, with FIFA expecting between 5 to 6.5 million fans to attend the tournament.
Despite the cancellations, officials remain optimistic about filling the rooms, citing high demand from fans and other events. The Independent has requested comment from FIFA and the Philadelphia Hotel Association, but no official statements have been released at this time.
