Darren Fletcher has described the opportunity to take temporary charge of Manchester United as an honour that surpasses even his most ambitious fantasies, following the club's sudden dismissal of manager Ruben Amorim.
From Academy to the Hot Seat
The 41-year-old former United midfielder has been promoted from his role as Under-18s coach to become caretaker boss. This swift change comes after the club decided to part ways with Ruben Amorim on Monday, ending his tenure at Old Trafford after just 14 months. Fletcher's first test will be Wednesday's Premier League fixture away at Burnley's Turf Moor.
Interim Contenders and Immediate Focus
It is understood that Fletcher is also in the running to remain as interim head coach until the season concludes. He faces competition from other notable former United figures being considered, including Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Michael Carrick, and Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Addressing the media at United's Carrington training base on Tuesday evening, Fletcher conveyed his mixed emotions. "It's surreal," he stated. "It's an amazing honour to be able to lead a Manchester United team. I don't think in my wildest dreams that was something that could happen."
He added, "To lead out a team is an amazing honour and something I'm really proud of today. Not in the circumstances I expected, that's something that doesn't sit easy with me, but I've got a job to do and will think of the honour and pride."
Future Talks on Hold
Despite confirming he has already held discussions with director of football Jason Wilcox, Fletcher was adamant that all conversation about a longer-term position must wait. His sole priority is the imminent match against Burnley.
"I've had a conversation and the focus was on this game. We'll speak after the game," Fletcher emphasised. "I've got a game to prepare for, a training session to organise, and speak to players. The focus has been on the Burnley match and we'll speak after the game."
Fletcher, who won five Premier League titles and the Champions League during his playing career at United, brings a deep understanding of the club to the role, having also served as a first-team coach and technical director.
