Forest Boss Laments Europa League Sacrifice for Premier League

Forest Manager Pereira Expresses Regret Over Europa League Compromise

Vitor Pereira, the head coach of Nottingham Forest, has openly admitted it is a "pity" that the club finds itself forced to prioritise Premier League survival over their Europa League ambitions. This stark reality comes as owner Evangelos Marinakis has made it unequivocally clear that relegation from England's top flight is unacceptable, despite his initial lofty European aspirations.

Owner's Ambition Clashes with Relegation Fears

The fiercely ambitious Marinakis had targeted European silverware following Forest's return to continental competition for the first time since the 1995-96 season. However, with the club sitting outside the Premier League relegation zone only on goal difference and just eight games remaining, domestic security has taken precedence. Pereira confirmed he has discussed this delicate balancing act directly with Marinakis, who invested approximately £200 million in players last summer with the belief it would position Forest to challenge for the Europa League trophy.

"He wants to keep the club in the Premier League, first of all, and try to compete in the Europa League, of course," Pereira stated. "This is what he said to me: it is important to keep the club in the Premier League and to try to compete in the Europa League. We will try our best to qualify."

Strategic Player Rotation Ahead of Critical Fixtures

This prioritisation will manifest in team selection for Thursday's crucial Europa League last-16 second leg against FC Midtjylland. Forest, who trail 1-0 from the first leg at home, must win in Denmark to advance to the quarter-finals. However, Pereira is expected to make several changes to his starting lineup, resting key players with Sunday's vital Premier League trip to Tottenham Hotspur in mind. Tottenham are direct rivals in the battle to avoid relegation, making that domestic clash arguably more significant.

"For me, it is a pity that I need to make decisions, to think not just about this game but the next two games," Pereira lamented. "I need to think about it because it is important for the club. Of course, the Europa League is important for the club but the [Premier] League is very important for the club."

Squad Unity and Fitness Concerns

A near full-strength Forest squad, including key figures like Morgan Gibbs-White and Murillo, has travelled to Jutland for the match. Notable long-term absentee Chris Wood trained with the group on Wednesday, targeting a return to action next month after being sidelined since October. Despite the travelling party's strength, Pereira emphasised the need for squad unity and freshness over splitting the group for different competitions.

"We are in a moment where we need to be united," he explained. "I cannot have [a group of] players for a game and [another group of] players for another game. I cannot separate the players. I believe to play on our level and to compete in a way I want to compete we need to be fresh mentally and physically. If we were in a safe position in the Premier League table, it [would be] completely different."

The manager's comments underscore the brutal pragmatism now governing Forest's season. The dream of European glory persists, but it is now secondary to the imperative of securing another season of Premier League football, a reality Pereira accepts with visible regret as his team prepares for two season-defining fixtures in quick succession.
