Steven Gerrard is being considered for the Burnley managerial role if the newly relegated club decides to part ways with Scott Parker. The Liverpool icon has previously managed in the Premier League and Scotland but has never taken charge of a team in the English second tier. He is eager to return to management and would be among the leading candidates if a vacancy arises at Turf Moor.
Parker's Tenure and Relegation
Scott Parker has been at Burnley for two years, leading them to promotion with 100 points, but could not maintain that success as the Clarets were relegated straight back to the Championship. Their relegation was confirmed last week following a defeat to Manchester City.
Talks are ongoing regarding Burnley's managerial situation, with a realistic possibility that Parker may leave. If that happens, Gerrard would be a top contender for the role.
Other Candidates
Craig Bellamy, who played alongside Gerrard at Liverpool, is also a candidate. Bellamy is currently in charge of the Wales national team but previously served as an assistant to Vincent Kompany at Burnley, where he made a strong impression.
Gerrard is now tax-exempt from his time in Saudi Arabia, having been required to remain outside the country for a full tax year after leaving Al Ettifaq in January 2025. He is no longer contracted to the Saudi Pro League side, having stayed on as a consultant after his departure.
His last job in England was at Aston Villa, where he was dismissed in October 2022 after nearly a year in charge. Burnley would be among the favourites for promotion next season, potentially offering Gerrard a chance to manage in the Premier League again.
Frank Lampard, another former England international, chose to step down to the Championship after several top-flight roles and has seen his reputation rise after securing promotion with Coventry City.
Several Premier League managerial positions may become available this summer, which could influence Gerrard's decision. Crystal Palace and Bournemouth have both confirmed their managers are leaving, and Marco Silva's contract at Fulham expires at the end of the season.
