Steven Gerrard's 'Brutally Honest' Liverpool Return Stance & Arne Slot Support
Gerrard's 'brutal' Liverpool return stance revealed

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has delivered a candid and emotional assessment of his future, stating he would return to Anfield "in any capacity" while offering his full backing to under-pressure manager Arne Slot.

Gerrard's 'Brutally Honest' Liverpool Admission

In a revealing interview on TNT Sports' 'Ally's Social Club', the former Reds captain was asked about his ambitions to one day manage the club he served as a player for 17 years. Gerrard responded with striking clarity, telling host Ally McCoist: "I'll be brutally, brutally honest with you. I'd help Liverpool in any department at any minute of every day. I'd help them with anything."

The 44-year-old, who has been out of management since leaving Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq in January 2025, was quick to frame his loyalty within the context of the club's current situation. He made a pointed show of support for Slot, who has faced scrutiny during a challenging period for the Merseyside club.

Backing For Arne Slot Amid Pressure

Demonstrating his integrity as a lifelong fan, Gerrard explicitly stated he does not wish for the Dutchman to be dismissed. "I don't want Arne Slot to lose his job," he asserted. "I want him to fix this and turn it around and make Liverpool great. I was bouncing all over the city four or five months ago when Liverpool won the league."

He reiterated his overarching desire to see the club succeed, adding: "I'm a Liverpool fan. I want the best for Liverpool. But if Liverpool need me in any department at any time, I'll be there for them."

Liverpool's form has shown signs of improvement recently, with a 2-1 away victory at Tottenham marking their third win in five matches, lifting them to fifth in the Premier League table.

Reflection on Aston Villa Exit

Gerrard also used the platform to analyse his tenure at Aston Villa, which came to an abrupt end in October 2022. He had taken charge in November 2021, guiding Villa from 17th to a mid-table finish in his first season, raising expectations.

"Going into the second season, I'm thinking: 'We've taken Villa from 17th to seventh, eighth, ninth,'" Gerrard recalled. "We're in a good place. We've made three or four really strong signings. Let's go for top ten, maybe have a go at the League Cup. If Europe happens, brilliant.'"

However, a poor start, including a 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth, saw momentum slip away. "When we lost momentum towards the end of October, I didn't feel like I could pull it back," he admitted. "I felt like I'd changed the dynamics and upset too many people in the dressing room too quickly, and that hurt me a lot."

Since his departure from Villa Park, Gerrard's only managerial role was the 18-month stint with Al-Ettifaq. He has been linked with a return to Rangers, where he won the Scottish Premiership title unbeaten in the 2020-21 season, but remains without a club, focusing on punditry work for now.
