Pep Guardiola Will Not Block Rodri's Potential Real Madrid Transfer
Guardiola Won't Stop Rodri Joining Real Madrid If Unhappy

Pep Guardiola has made it clear that he will not stand in the way of Rodri if the Manchester City midfielder desires a move to Real Madrid, though the manager remains optimistic about his star player's future at the club.

Rodri's Comments Spark Transfer Speculation

During the recent international break, Rodri, whose contract with Manchester City runs until June 2027, addressed rumours linking him with a switch to Real Madrid. The 29-year-old Spanish international, who previously played for Atlético Madrid, hinted that joining one of the world's elite clubs would be hard to refuse.

"There are other players who've taken that path," Rodri remarked. "Not directly, but over time. For me, you can't turn down the best clubs in the world."

Guardiola's Stance on Player Happiness

When questioned about Rodri's future, Guardiola reiterated his long-standing policy that no player should be forced to stay at Manchester City against their will. "Absolutely. The organisation of the club is above all of us – if one player is not happy, they have to leave," he stated.

Guardiola emphasized that while he believes Rodri is content at City, the decision ultimately rests with the player. "Continue the same here if they are happy, and I think he is happy. If he is not happy just knock on the door of the sporting director, accept an offer according to his incredible quality, and after that he doesn't belong to the club – only himself."

Contract Talks and Managerial Uncertainty

Guardiola expressed confidence that Rodri will remain at Manchester City beyond this summer, noting the club's strong desire to retain him. "I know what the club wants. They informed me what they want from Rodri – it is to stay, stay, stay. I think [he will]. Always, I had the positive [feeling] with that but in the end I don't know."

The manager's own future adds another layer of intrigue, as his contract also expires in 2027. Guardiola dismissed questions about whether club executives have sought clarity on his plans, simply stating, "I spoke about that in the past many, many times."

Comparison to Chelsea's Enzo Fernández

Rodri's comments were contrasted with those of Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández, who recently praised Madrid as a "beautiful city" and was subsequently dropped by his coach for crossing a line. Guardiola, however, saw no issue with Rodri's remarks and indicated he would not intervene.

"No, what Chelsea has done is Chelsea's [business]. There is no one player that will turn around regarding the chance to play for Madrid [and turn it down]. He was born in Spain. My wish is that Rodri could stay as long as possible in this club – he's an incredible, top player but the life of everyone is everyone's, so ..."

FA Cup Ambitions and Player Form

Looking ahead, Guardiola is focused on Manchester City's FA Cup quarter-final clash against Liverpool, aiming to lead the team to a historic fourth consecutive final. He reflected on the club's recent successes with pride.

"I don't need to finish [my career] and go to the Maldives underneath the coconuts to realise how incredible it is – how proud I am. It's unbelievable. I don't know if, in English football, one team has been to seven semi-finals in a row in this competition, the FA Cup. I know four Carabao Cups in a row, four Premier Leagues in a row. I'm sorry, I'm so proud."

On the topic of Phil Foden's recent dip in form, Guardiola suggested that missing the World Cup could offer a rest benefit, but stressed the importance of seizing international opportunities. "I'm pretty sure he would love to go with England. These opportunities cannot be missed. If you have an opportunity, play as good as possible to be selected because it's only one every four years. You have to."
