Lewis Hamilton's Christmas Day Decision Fuels Ferrari Resurgence in F1
The seven-time Formula 1 world champion, Lewis Hamilton, has disclosed that a firm decision made on Christmas Day, coupled with the most intense pre-season training of his career, has been instrumental in his strong start to the 2026 season with Ferrari. After a disappointing debut year with the Scuderia, where he failed to secure a single podium finish for the first time in 19 seasons, Hamilton is now showing renewed vigour on the track.
Intense Winter Training and a Pivotal Decision
Hamilton, now 41, described his winter training as the "heaviest and the most intense that I've ever had," attributing the rigorous regimen partly to the demands of ageing, which requires longer recovery times. However, he emphasised that this effort was paired with a critical mental commitment. "I just decided on Christmas Day how I was going to start this season," Hamilton revealed. "I decided what I was going to do mentally and I'm going to continue to tweak that." This decision, made during the holiday, has clearly paid dividends, as Hamilton has been competing fiercely against rivals like George Russell and Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes, as well as his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc.
First Ferrari Podium and Team Morale Boost
At the recent Chinese Grand Prix, Hamilton achieved a significant milestone by clinching his first podium finish for Ferrari, securing third place. This result marks a turning point after his podium-less 2025 campaign. Hamilton credited his improved performance to several factors beyond his personal training:
- Working with a trusted trainer since Christmas Day, integrating new tools and techniques.
- Enhanced team dynamics, including a new race engineer, Carlo Santi, who has temporarily replaced Riccardo Adami, with Cedric Michel-Grosjean expected to take the role permanently soon.
- Great morale within the Ferrari team, which he described as a "real good boost."
Reflecting on his current form, Hamilton stated after China: "I definitely feel like I'm back to my best, both mentally and physically. I still think there's room to improve. I think I can still eke out more performance from this car. I'm still learning about it as I go, particularly with [energy] deployment. I do think there's more to come."
Looking Ahead to the Japanese Grand Prix
As the F1 circus heads to Suzuka for the Japanese Grand Prix, Hamilton is poised to build on his momentum. A five-time winner at this iconic circuit, he is still chasing his first grand prix victory for Ferrari. The Scuderia's last win dates back to October 2024, achieved by former driver Carlos Sainz. With his Christmas Day decision and intense preparation now yielding results, Hamilton's resurgence could signal a competitive shift for Ferrari in the 2026 season, as he aims to end the team's victory drought and add to his illustrious career tally.
