Iranian snooker sensation Hossein Vafaei has secured a place in the World Championship quarter-finals after a dramatic 13-12 victory over world number one Judd Trump. The match, held at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield on Monday, saw Vafaei hold his nerve in a tense final-frame decider, marking the biggest win of his career.
Emotional Journey Amid Conflict
Vafaei, ranked 32nd in the world and known as the "Prince of Persia," has been grappling with emotional turmoil due to the ongoing war in Iran. He admitted to being "all over the place" mentally in recent months, even questioning whether to participate in tournaments. However, he chose to "fight for my people," a decision that propelled him through the qualifying rounds and into the main event.
His campaign began with a commanding 10-3 victory over former semi-finalist Si Jiahui in the first round. The win against Trump, however, was particularly significant, as it secured his first-ever quarter-final appearance at the World Championship.
A Message of Hope
Reflecting on his mixed emotions, Vafaei said: "I don’t know whether to be happy. I don’t know whether to be sad. I don’t know what to do. This is the only thing I can do. With my cue, I can do something for them to make them happy at least. To show that the Iran flag is there... and you still can’t raise it."
The snooker star revealed that concerns for his family's safety during the conflict have made it difficult to focus on the game. "I was getting sometimes sad, with what’s happening," he explained. "And I don’t want to open up, but yes, I decided to fight, fight for my people, and all the Iranians all over the world. And hopefully I can make them happy."
When asked about representing a cause beyond sport, Vafaei emphasised the sincerity of his actions: "I am not thinking about all this. Everything I am doing is from the bottom of my heart. There are lots of things going on in Iran. Even if I win the trophy, it’s nothing."
Next Challenge
Vafaei is set to face China’s Wu Yize in the quarter-finals, which begin on Tuesday. His remarkable journey continues to captivate fans worldwide, as he carries the hopes of his nation on his shoulders.
