Jon Rahm Clarifies PIF's Role in LIV Golf Amid Funding Speculation
Jon Rahm Explains PIF's Role in LIV Golf Team

LIV Golf star Jon Rahm has provided a clear explanation of the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund's pivotal role within his Legion XIII team, addressing swirling rumours about the league's financial stability. The Spanish golfer, who controversially defected from the PGA Tour in 2023, was handed the opportunity to lead an expansion side as part of his reported nine-figure contract.

Rahm Dismisses Ownership Claims

In a recent interview with Spanish outlet ABC, Rahm firmly dismissed the idea that he owns the Legion XIII outfit. "Well, as for being an owner... The real owners of each team are still the league and the PIF (Saudi investment fund)," he stated. "So they're the ones in charge, sort of." This clarification comes amid ongoing speculation about LIV Golf's long-term prospects, with reports suggesting the PIF could potentially withdraw its financial backing.

Team Dynamics and Recent Success

Rahm emphasised his role as captain of Legion XIII, noting the valuable support from veteran player Tyrrell Hatton. "What does give me more responsibility is being captain of Legion XIII, although I'm lucky to have Tyrrell Hatton, a very veteran player who turned pro well before I did, and it's almost like having two captains," he explained. The four-man squad, which also includes Northern Irish golfer Tom McKibbin and American Caleb Surratt, secured an equipment deal with Callaway in March 2025.

Legion XIII claimed the team championship last season and recently triumphed at LIV Golf Mexico City, finishing comfortably at the top on 45-under-par. Rahm also secured the individual title by six strokes, demonstrating his focus amidst the external noise.

Ignoring the Rumours

When questioned about the persistent rumours surrounding LIV's future, Rahm revealed his strategy of avoidance. "I'm not paying any attention to it at all," he told ABC. "The other day I started getting messages about it, so I turned my phone off. Until the people in charge here tell me something concrete, I'm not going to waste my time thinking about it. I have a signed contract, and everyone here gets paid."

He added, "I don't see any reason to worry. What I have to do is play golf." Rahm has topped LIV's season-long points standings in both of his previous two campaigns, underscoring his commitment to performance over speculation.

League Context and Future

The establishment of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf has caused a significant rift within professional golf in recent years, luring numerous high-profile names away from the PGA Tour. Despite doubts about its sustainability, LIV CEO Scott O'Neil recently dismissed claims of financial withdrawal in a leaked email. Rahm's remarks highlight the continued importance of the PIF to the league's operations.

The next scheduled event is LIV Golf Virginia, set to commence on 7 May in Washington DC, as the league pushes forward amid ongoing scrutiny and debate within the golfing world.
